Description: Two silver pennies of William the Lion of Scotland's Short Cross and Stars issue, struck by the moneyer Henri Le Rus of Roxburgh between 1205 and 1230. Date: 1205-30 Discussion: These two coins are both struck from the same obverse die. Whilst pennies of William the Lion are found in Norfolk these two were found close together and the fact that they were both struck by the same moneyer employing the same obverse die they were, on the balance of probability, brought to Oxborough together and lost at the same time. They most likely represent part (or possibly al…

After inspection 24 of the recovered coins, all large copper alloy nummi of Constantius II, Constans and Magnentius, were recognized as being from a dispersed hoard and were separated. Description of find All 24 coins are large copper alloy nummi of Constantius II, Constans and Magnentius which, with the exception of one irregular imitation, were all struck at the Roman empire's Western mints between 348 and 353. These coins are relatively uncommon as stray finds and the presence of so many together in one area is good evidence for the constituent coins being part of a hoard d…

Two medieval silver coins were found whilst searching with a metal detector during October 2008, in the same immediate area as a small dispersed hoard of six coins that was discovered by the same finder in November 2007 (2007T676, recorded at NMS-EA4080). Description: The two coins are both sterling pennies of Edward I, one a class 3d type of Bristol, the other a class 9b of London. The earlier coin is more heavily worn than the later, which is consistent with the hoard's putative terminal date of c1310. Catalogue: 1) Edward I penny, class 3d, Bristol mint, 1280-1 2) Edward …

Description of find Eleven silver groats that vary in date. The earliest, worn and quite heavily clipped, dates to Edward III's so-called Pre-Treaty issue of 1351-61, seven to the reign of Edward IV (1460-83) and the three latest to that of Henry VII (1485-1509). Despite thorough searching of the immediate area, there was no sign of any receptacle and so the hoard presumably constitutes a purse loss. The three latest coins, dating from 1490-1504, show some wear but not a great deal and so we may set the date of loss or deposition of these coins to around 1510-20. Catalogue Edw…

CORONER'S REPORT Description of find: The coins, originally totaling at least five in number, had been stacked one on top of the other. At some time extreme heat has caused them to fuse together, this process rendering all details apart from one side of a fragmentary coin illegible. This one legible face is a small cross pattee type, presumably a reverse, of early tenth century date. The lettering is crude and this coin would seem to be a contemporary imitation from the Danelaw. A similar group of fused pennies was found at Aylsham in 2002. The legend reads [...]HRlDGAR[...].…
