An incomplete copper-alloy 'Birdlip' or 'Beaked Bow' type brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date, c.50 BC - AD 50. The brooch comprises an ovate head from the reverse of which a corroded spring mechanism projects. The pin no longer remains. The upright stem of the cross is inlaid with a single rectangular strip of wood and two smaller strips of wood form the arms. Single copper-alloy rivets hold the wood in place at the upper terminal of the upright stem and the outer end of both arms. A hole for a fourth rivet is present at the foot of the upright stem though the rivet no longer remains. Here the wood has lifted away from the copper-alloy back of the pendant.…

A similar example is illustrated in Read, p.147, no.576 and is dated to the early post-medieval period.

Internal curved transverse bars are present to either side of the spindle which itself has a double spiked tongue. Iron corrosion is present where the spindle meats the frame. The outer frame bears ribbed decoration. The metal has a dark green patina and is in fair condition. The buckle is 17.1mm long, 16.4mm wide, 2.6mm thick and weighs 1.3g. A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1800. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a central perforation running through it. Both surfaces are decorated with irregularly spaced raised lines radiating from the central perforation. Each resulting trapezoidal cells houses three raised pellets. A complete copper-alloy button of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 - 1700. The head of the button is domed, with a convex front and flat reverse. An integral ovate shank projects off-centre from the reverse. The upper surface of the button is decorated with six rows of pellets in a grid pattern resulting in a cross-hatched design. Both terminals display rivet holes containing the remains of copper-alloy rivets and a third, large whole is present to the centre on the rounded lobe. A narrow circular sectioned bow extends from the front of the head widening slightly to a crude circular acanthus moulding. A copper-alloy Sterling bust jetton issued under Edward II dating to the period AD 1310 - 1314. Long cross with pellets in angles within border of pellets. Mint of London. Class 11. Similar jettons can be seen in Mitchiner, p.100, no's.118-120. The basic design of the jetton is based on the sterling pennies introduced by Edward I in 1279 though bear decorative borders rather than the legends typically seen on coins of the period.
