Approximately half the guard survives; it is an irregular oval shape in plan being concave / dished in profile and distorted from original shape. On the internal edge are the remains of a rectangular slot through which the tang of the blade passed. It is across this slot that the hilt guard is broken. An incomplete and abraded buckle plate formed from a sheet of gilded copper alloy of probable medieval date (AD 1150-1400). The sheet is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and would have been folded around the offset bar of a single looped buckle frame. A small fragment of this frame survives with ornament bulbous knops on the corners of the frame. A single notch has been cut from the plate at the mid point - through here a rectangular buckle pin would have fitted. The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in section; it has a rim / cast ridge running around its outer edge. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 9.3mm.
