A complete cast copper alloy leg or foot from a copper alloy vessel probably a cauldron, posnet or skillet of later medieval date (1300 - 1600). The foot is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section expanding from a wide head with a large dished shaped terminal which would have fitted the base of the vessel to a rectangular foot. The leg is relatively plain with a central rib that extends from the top of the outside edge to a swelling above the base. The foot is paw or ball like when it is placed on a flat surface it lies at an angle of 80 degrees. The leg is a mid green colou…

A fragment of cast copper alloy turned possible vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1400 - 1650). The fragment is broadly rectangular in shape. It is likely to be from a dish, bowl, or cooking vessel with a stepped and out-turned rim, or it could possibly be part of a candlestick holder. The vessel fragment is a mid-green to purple colour with an abraded patina. The inner surface has a series of circumferentially incised lines, these may also be file marks. From what survives of the object it is too small to offer a suggestion of the original size or circumferen…

A Roman copper alloy Trulla or pan handle dating to the second century AD. The pan handle consists of a single flat piece of copper alloy. The handle has a curved upper edge with a large semi-circular perforation. The curve of the perforation mirrors the curve of the upper edge of the handle. Below the upper curved edge the handle broadens around the perforation where there are two animal heads flanking the outer edge of the object. Below the perforation the handle then tapers to a flat broken edge that has two small circular perforations at each corner. The two zoomorphic figures fla…

A Medieval or Post Medieval (12th to mid-19th centuries) fragment of a cooking vessel leg. In plan the fragment is a sub-rectangular and consists of the upper part of the leg that would have attached to the vessel. There is an irregular shaped raised moulding on the upper face that would have formed part of the attachment on to the vessel. The outer edge of the upper face is curved and rises to a flat edge that would have supported the vessel. There is a broken edge which would have formed the upper part of the leg. This break is not recent. The fragment is rectangular in section with…

Body sherd fragment of an unglazed earthenware pottery probably from a vessel dating from the medieval period (1200 - 1350). Not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size, without this a more specific date is difficult. The sherd is most likely to be from a thin walled unglazed fine-ware jug or similar delicate tableware vessel. There is no evidence of heating and sooting on the exterior face of the sherd suggesting these this was not involved in cooking food. One ceramic body sherd of Medieval date. The fabric is a hard, reduced brown at the core with a mid-orange on the exterior on both outer faces. Temper includes frequent, very fine sand. The exterior does not appear to have decoration or any glaze. Due to the small fragment size it would be too difficult to determine the size of the original vessel. The sherd measures Length: 31.87 mm, Width: 20.5 mm, Thickness: 5.77 mm and Weighs: 4.7 grams.

Nine fragments of medieval pottery, these are all body sherds. Two sherds have the remains of a green glaze on one face. One sherd has the remains of a pale brown coloured glaze. One sherd has evidence of sooting therefore is possibly a cooking vessel as opposed to the others that are possibly tableware. The fragments have a buff colour on the outside edge and a grey core of varying thicknesses, the fragments have frequent fine grit inclusions. The other two opposing edges are curved and rounded. The handle is 'D' shaped in cross section and in profile. The upper face is decorated with a dot and circle motif. A Medieval or Post Medieval (12th to mid-19th centuries) cooking vessel leg. In plan the leg is a sub-rectangular with an asymmetrical rounded foot and a broken upper edge. This break is not recent. The leg is rectangular in section with rounded edges and one face is decorated with a slight central vertical ridge. The surface has a mottled mid green to dark brown patina. It is uncertain what type of vessel this leg comes from, but Egan (1998) comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. According to Butler, Green and Payne …
