Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

An incomplete cast copper alloy (Bronze) flat axe of Early Bronze Age date c. 2250-1900 BC. The axe is incomplete and only the cutting edge and lower blade survive, the butt and upper blade are lost due to an abraded but relatively recent break. It is very possibly that the other part is present in the field in which this was found. The condition of the axe is poor - small areas of a deep brown coloured surface patina are present but the majority has been removed by laminating corrosion. The tips of the blade and the cutting edge are also both abraded. The profile of the axe was proba…

Object type: RAPIER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete fragment from a much eroded cast bronze (copper alloy) rapier of Middle Bronze Age date (1500-1150BC). The fragment consists of part of the lower blade a rapier, the tip has been previously recorded (HESH-3B6C58) and was recovered by a different finder from the same field. The two blade pieces conjoin and should therefore be considered as part of the same artefact. The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with one end being slightly tapered. A central ridge / mid rib runs along the length of the fragment on both faces. The rapier fragment is a mid-green colour wit…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cheshire East

A fragment of a large cast copper alloy (bronze) socketed axe. The fragment consists of the cutting edge and lower blade of a late Bronze Age axe (1100 - 800 BC). The axe fragment is sub-rectangular in plan with a curved (convex) cutting edge. The sides, adjacent to the cutting edge, taper inwards towards the break. In profile the fragment is sub-triangular (wedge shaped). The convex cutting edge of the axe fragment, although corroded and abraded, is worn suggesting it was heavily used in antiquity. The break at the top of the fragment is old and abraded and has an uneven edge. The br…
