A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl Medieval to Post Medieval date (1100 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1300-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in section; it has a rim / cast ridge running around its outer edge. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 9.3mm. When reported and photographed the central hole was filled with hard compacted soil - when it was removed an irregular sub-triangular depression most probably a casting flaw in the internal side wall of the hole was revealed.…

The upper surface comprises of ten ribs that emanate from the central perforation. In between each rib is a deep groove. A possible lead or lead alloy spindle whorl dating to the Roman to Medieval Period (AD 43 - 1500). In plan it is sub-circular and in profile is sub oval in shape. There is a circular perforation which is 9.4mm diameter and placed slightly off centre. The perforation is fairly uniform in shape, therefore it was probably cast. Both faces of the whorl are undecorated. The surface of the spindle whorl is a cream colour and has been abraded in places. It measures 30.5mm diameter and has a thickness of 10.1 mm. It weighs 50.8 grams.

It is difficult to date lead spindle whorls without supporting archaeological context. The whorl measures 27.1mm diameter, is 9.5mm thick and weighs 27.0 grams.

A stone spindle whorl probably dating to the later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - AD 1700) made of a course sandstone. It is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object has a regular hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. The object has an even mid-brown patina.
