An incomplete fragment from the head and upper bow of a cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from AD 75 - 175. The fragment of the brooch is distorted with the bow being further bent and distorted - probably deliberately in antiquity. The head of the brooch is oval in plan. The reverse of it is divided by a vertical rectangular bar which is pierced at the mid-point. It is through this hole that the spring / pin would have been fixed. Both the pin and spring are lost. An incomplete late Roman/ Early-Medieval (AD 400-600) penannular brooch of Fowler's Type D and Booth's type D2. The frame is sub-circular, and oval in cross-section. The pin is missing. The brooch is made from a single cylindrical piece of copper alloy that has been bent into a circle, with the outer edges bent back to form terminals lying flat against the frame. A fragment of a copper alloy, Roman bow brooch probably of Polden Hill type (c.AD75-AD175) or possibly a Trumpet brooch (c.AD75-AD175). The fragment is sub oval in plan. Due to its fragmentary nature it is problematic to assign a firm classification. It is broken at the head, therefore the spring, bow, pin, foot and catch plate are missing. Iron staining indicates the former position of the spring on the largest flat surface of the fragment. The object has a dark green patina. The fragment measures 16.6 mm in length, 11 mm in width and weighs 4.8 grams.
