A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl Medieval to Post Medieval date (1100 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1300-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in section; it has a rim / cast ridge running around its outer edge. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 9.3mm. When reported and photographed the central hole was filled with hard compacted soil - when it was removed an irregular sub-triangular depression most probably a casting flaw in the internal side wall of the hole was revealed.…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. Complete cast copper alloy 'vesica' shaped seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400). The seal matrix is sub-oval (oval with pointed ends) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. On the reverse face of the seal on the upper edge in alignment with the two pointed ends, is a small sub-oval perforated lug. This lug is set at an angle of 90° to the plain of the body of the seal. An incomplete cast lead alloy zoomorphic mount or figurine in the form of a stylised fish or dolphin. The figure consists of the head facing right with a slightly rounded open mouth. The upper part of the jaw is thicker and more prominent than the lower half. The figure has a large eye consisting of an oval shaped pellet set in an oval shaped groove. A possible lead or lead alloy spindle whorl dating to the Roman to Medieval Period (AD 43 - 1500). In plan it is sub-circular and in profile is sub oval in shape. There is a circular perforation which is 9.4mm diameter and placed slightly off centre. The perforation is fairly uniform in shape, therefore it was probably cast. Both faces of the whorl are undecorated. The surface of the spindle whorl is a cream colour and has been abraded in places. It measures 30.5mm diameter and has a thickness of 10.1 mm. It weighs 50.8 grams.

Three lead alloy shot / balls, of probable post medieval or early modern date (1600-1800AD). The two larger shots are probably from a carbine and the smallest from a pistol. All of the shots are sub spherical in shape and some show evidence of casting seams from the moulds. The two largest probable carbine balls have a rough surface so have probably been fired. A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Carbine of post medieval date circa (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with an uneven surface suggesting that it has been fired. There are a number of scars visible, one of which may be the sprue scar. The casting seam is not visible. The shot is a cream to light brown colour. Similar shots have been dated to the later Post Medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. In the centre of the upper part of the inkwell a circular funnel projects that has a sub circular pierced hole which would have acted as a mouth through which the ink could be accessed and toped up.
