Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded T-shaped iron nail with a tapered, rectangular-sectioned shank. The tip is missing. A number of early to early post-medieval horseshoes have been found in close proximity and T-shaped nails were used to secure these;however, this nail seems larger than those used to secure horseshoes and was probably used for construction purposes. The nail probably dates from the Late Medieval to early-post-Medieval periods.

A worn and corroded iron horseshoe fragment consisting of the left branch, with three sub-square, punched nail holes. Two nails survive in situ; these appear to be spike nails ( also known as frost nails), which suggests a winter shoe. The heel is tapered, with no evidence of thickening or a calkin. The shoe is flat in section and is probably a draught shoe of the early post-Medieval period. The nail holes on this shoe are particulary small and seem designed to take the spike nail which would remain proud to assist the grip in inclement weather conditions. The shoe is probably a t…

A corroded and worn iron horseshoe fragment of a probable Anglo-Saxon date. The fragment consists only of the right branch with two oval, punched nail holes. The heel is narrow and thickened. Although corrosion has robbed the edges of the shoe, the wavy edge is still evident. The larger type oval nail hole with angled edge would accept a 'fiddle key' type nail which would protrude by almost half its length. Cf; Ivan G. Sparkes. Old Horseshoes. Page 8.

A worn and corroded dove type iron horseshoe from the Medieval period. Both branches are equal in form and are thickened at the heel. The left branch has four rectangular nail holes; the right branch has three nail holes. The holes are tapered on both branches. The shoe is a little distorted, has a round frog and is of flat section. This is probably a saddle shoe. This shoe does not have the recesses for T-shaped nails, so it is probable that spiked ,square-headed or french nails may have been used. Also, this shoe is quite large and so may be a draught shoe.
