Object type: COIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Silver coin. A possibly milled and very worn coin, with marks suggesting it has formerly been folded as a keepsake. The mass - with due allowance for heavy wear - does not make it seem likely this was a sixpence, the most commonly folded coin, but perhaps a smaller denomination. Other than signs of creasing, no detail remains on either side of the coin. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1690-1700 Diameter: 20.3mm, Weight: 1.52gms

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint scraper. A small thick chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with similarly broad flakes struck from a bulbar ventral surface - it might be debated which side was originally which. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ?dorsal aspect follows a curved end opposite a broad butt and striking platform. A misty white p[atina may suggest the object has been exposed to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Copper alloy mount. A tiny sheet metal sexfoil mount of concavo-convex form, with rust trapped in its concave side suggesting the use of an iron fixing pin, or possibly the proximity of other iron to its setting. Lead possible weight. Cast discoid flat-sided weight with a tiny [diameter c.1.3mm] pierced hole off-centre; patinated. One of two similar objects reported together from the same general location. The hole would admit a fine cord, perhaps of horsehair, and may suggest a use as a fishing line weight, though a flat discoid form is unusual, and perhaps indicates the personal preference of an individual. Lead spindle whorl. Cast sub-cylindrical whorl with a moulded tapered aperture of diameter 8.5-11.5mm, Walton Rogers form B; patinated. Shrinkage around the hole may suggest this was cast in an open mould. The size of the spindle hole may suggest an Anglo-Scandinavian date, with which the form is compatible. Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead unidentified object fragment. One end of a cast rectangular box with a hole of diameter 4.3mm drilled through its base; it appears that a diminutive gutter runs towards this hole, so its provision may have been an original feature of the object. Fine casually executed cuts appear across the upstanding edges of the box, and there is a small dimple in its upper surface at its surviving end. The object is distorted towards the cut or broken end, probably by the episode which truncated it. Patinated. The casual finishing might suggest this to be a toy or miniature object, though if …

Copper alloy and bone button. Composite discoid button with a probably die-stamped copper alloy front with a central dished hollow and a right handed spiral arrangement of small leaf-shaped figures against a finely lined ground; a border of continuous flattened triangles limits the decorated field. Gilding traces appear extensively. A slightly plano-convex section bone disc with a groove around its outer edge serves as a back plate clenched by the rim of the front, with a drawn wire loop passing into it. The mass suggests a hollow construction. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900…

Moulded vertical bars appear at the inner and outer edges of the display side of the plate, and a pair of prongs project from its putative inner end. This configuration would more normally be rendered in flexible sheet metal, but this may be indicative of early construction. Suggested date: Medieval, 1150-1300.
