Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy probable strap end. A small cast plate with a spilt end, and with slightly flared sides; the other end is lost. Indistinct traces of moulded ornament on one side may suggest this to be a small zoomorphic strap end which has lost its beast head terminal; if so, of Thomas Class A. There is, however, no evidence for the attachment of the strap. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 750-850. Length: 28.2mm, Width: 6.6mm, Thickness (at midpoint): 1.4mm, Weight: 1.53gms

Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible metalworking debris. A small fragment of lead melt which appears to have congealed on a flat surface with three or four small [diameter c.2m] holes around a larger [diameter c.10mm] hole, with the lead marking the positions of holes it has flowed into and preserving them as features in relief. The regularity of the arrangement of these putative imprints may suggest a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Length: 26.4mm, Width: 19.3mm, Thickness (overall): 10.1mm, Weight: 16.77gms

Grey flint borer. A thick chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer working. The bulbar ventral surface bears covering angled scalar retouch, executed in hefty drafts which have left a rippled surface to each flake removal scar. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Copper alloy unidentified object. A rectangular plate with a small straight-sided lug at one end. A fixing hole of diameter 3.5mm lies towards one end, and the plate is perhaps broken across the site of another at its other end. A tiny trace of gilding appears on the display face. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 37.8mm, Width (at lug): 21.8mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 4.67gms

The display side may be coated with black material or sooted. The form may suggest a function relating to the suspension or attachment of another item as a pendent mount. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Length: 17.8mm, Width: 12.4mm, Thickness (overall, clear of rivet): 1.6mm, Weight: 0.91gms

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint serrated implement fragment. A thin flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, producing serrations so fine they are more easily felt than observed. Misty white patina has developed over struck surfaces, suggesting the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. The blade is broken, probably recently. Lead shot. Cast belted ball for a light rifled fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun, flattened by impact. Patinated. The moulded medial band around the shot was intended to engage rifling within a gun barrel, and was first used with the Brunswick rifle introduced to military use in the 1840s. Copper alloy probable box mount. Cast strip, lightly concavo-convex, thinned and slightly flared at one end and broken across a fixing hole of diameter c.1.5mm at the other. A moulded decorative scheme of chevrons with supplementary incised lines appears towards the unbroken end. A grey-buff material adheres on the back towards the flared end. Length: 31.5mm, Width: 10.5mm, Thickness (overall): 2.6mm, Weight: 3.19g. The finder kindly suggests an Anglo-Scandinavian date, but the decoration appears too crisp and the metal too thin for this to obtain. This reporter initially considere…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy unidentified object. A tiny rectangular scrap of cast lead or lead alloy - the lack of flexibility commends the latter. There is possibly a rhomboid in low relief on one side. This might be an improvised playing piece, though it might equally be an offcut or a fragment from a larger object. The metal retains a grey tint. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Copper alloy ring. Cast penannular loop of probably drawn wire with rounded ends now c.2.5mm apart. With the rounded ends of the band in mind, a function as an ear ring might be entertained. Other uses entailing the suspension or attachment of other objects might equally apply. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1100-1800. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy, probable penannular brooch. Cast penannular brooch with a plain round section band and flattened and coiled terminals at right angles to the plane of the band, Fowler Type C. The upper or outer side of the band retains faint traces of ribbed ornament, though this may merely be chatter marks from finishing. The finder kindly suggests a function as an ear ring. In this case, this suggestion may be credible: first, because the band retains some tensile strength as would be required for such a function; secondly, there is no sign of a pin; and, thirdly, this tiny object woul…

Blue-grey flint possible scraper. A thick flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. Misty patina has developed over the struck surfaces, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This is disrupted along part of the edge, possibly by battering or reuse of a discarded tool. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a tortoise scraper.
