Lead shot. Cast ball, patinated. The mass and diameter, at a little under one ounce, may suggest this to have been for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading pistol or carbine of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 16.1mm, Weight: 23.69gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of plano-convex form with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.2mm, Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines in the upper surface as cast suggest the object was made in an open mould. Patinated, and distorted by subsequent impact. The ample hole may point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the mass suggests a primary function plying cord. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000. Diameter: 29.3mm, Thickness: 12.9mm, Weight: 68.52gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast globular or biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.8mm. Moulded decoration appears in the form of ill-defined pellets which are restricted to the vicinity of the hole on one side only, possibly detail softened by casting this object in a mould formed around a similar object as a copy. Lightly patinated. Whorls of globular form appear from the 13th century, though lead examples are rare, and the form here may anticipate that of early post-medieval biconical whorls on which pelleted decoration is common. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconicalx whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.8mm. A moulded design in high relief appears on both sides. One is dominated by straight and curved radial lines which intermittently cross each other to produce a series of trapezoid compartments. The other side bears a more pronounced right hand spiral motif on one side and compartmented cells on the other. Both sides have a prominent rim around the central hole, and a medial circumferential rib where the two halves meet. The mass might permit a primary function spinning a yarn. Patinated. Sugge…

Lead shot. Cast ball with distorting damage from a penetrating impact into a material such as stony clay. The mass, at just under an ounce, may suggest this to have been for use with a light musket, or with a pistol or carbine of military specification. The metal retains a grey tint, so this might have been recently disturbed from a sealed environment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 17.0mm, Weight: 26.30gms

Lead weight. Cast weight in the form of a heart ith flat vertical sides all around. Lightly patinated. The mass may suggest this to have represented one averdepois pound. The heart shape was favoured for various decorative mounts of the early post-medieval period, while, at least for commercial use, this object should pre-date the formal prohibition of lead weights in or before the 19th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length: 50.0mm, Width: 43.9mm, Thickness: 17.3mm, Weight: c.245gms

Lead possible metalworking debris. A small fragment of lead melt which appears to have congealed on a flat surface with three or four small [diameter c.2m] holes around a larger [diameter c.10mm] hole, with the lead marking the positions of holes it has flowed into and preserving them as features in relief. The regularity of the arrangement of these putative imprints may suggest a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Lead shot. Cast belted ball for a light rifled fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun, flattened by impact. Patinated. The moulded medial band around the shot was intended to engage rifling within a gun barrel, and was first used with the Brunswick rifle introduced to military use in the 1840s. Lead vessel repair or pot mend. A small cast plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall of thickness c.2.6mm. Patinated. The plug is neat and flat on the outer side of the vessel and preserves the more untidy form of the lead which solidified as it was poured into the hole on its inner side. The small size and neat finish may hint at a Roman date. Diameter: 19.8mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 14.11gms

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast whorl of plano-convex profile with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 13.3mm. A rim around the hole is defined on both sides. The convex side bears surface irregularities which might suggest this to have been cast using one side of a biconical decorated whorl to form the mould in which this was made. The mass suggests a primary function plying cord. Another example of a copied whorl was reported along with this one from the same general location. Patinated.
