Copper alloy buckle plate fragment. A rectangular plate with a folded and slotted end to clasp a buckle frame [lost]; most of the back part of the plate is lost. A pair of rivets of head diameter 2.6mm and length 5.3mm pass through the plate close to the folded end. A further three empty rivet holes of diameter 2mm also appear, along with slight traces of gilding and a faint indication of an incised linear border. Abraded. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300. Copper alloy rowel spur. Cast D section sides or arms with a single collared figure-of-eight terminal remaining at the end of one of them. A short straight collared rowel box projects from the heel; a circular housing at its ends retains the worn stub of a rowel with three short spikes remaining; these are trapped in ferrous corrosion, perhaps from an iron spindle; this may have solidified in antiquity, leaving the jammed rowel to be used as a prick spur. The ample spindle size may suggest an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the mass points to a primary function plying cord. Light nicks on the flat side may represent the addition of tying notches.
