Copper alloy possible stylus. Cast round section rod with a moulded point at one end, flat at the other. The form closely resembles that of both lead dry-points of medieval date and the similar lead pencils for schoolroom use which are of later post-medieval date. Late Roman finds are prominent in the vicinity, so this may be a fragment wjhich has lost the spatulate eraser usually associated with Rpman styli. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period. Whorls in other materials acquired lathe-turned globular forms from about the 13th century, which migh…

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A possibly moulded design has been partially carried over to one flat side only, unless these irregularities represent shrinkage in an open mould, and lipping appears on the opposite side. Patinated, and probably lightly distorted. The mass points to a primary function plying cord, if not as a flywheel for some other mechanical purpose. The size of spindle hole could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, but the possible decoration on one side might rather point to …

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Triangle of thin sheet metal with two rounded corners and two tiny [diameter 1.1mm] holes, one blind. Possibly for a small value from a set of chemist’s weights. The discovery of a scale of Roman lorica squamata (NLM-C42002) which also has cut corners, reported along with this object, might alternatively suggest this to be another piece of scale armour, albeit of different form.
