A lump of lead whose function or use is uncertain. This unidentified object is also of uncertain date. It weighs 42.19g, and currently has a sub-spherical to sub-cuboid form. Lead is a heavy but soft metal and it is therefore more probable that this artefact started as a sphere and has deformed to gain flatter sides under its own weight. Only one of the surfaces appears markedly different to the others. This has a depressed slot around less than half of the circumference. The slot has a width of 1.9mm and depth of 0.7mm. The diameter of the lump, measured along the axi…

A lead artefact of uncertain date. This is probably a weight to weigh goods with but may have been used as a small plumb-bob or weight to tension a cord or material instead. Weight is 22.63g (0.80oz) and length is 31.5mm. The cross-section appears to be circular but close inspection shows the sides to be subtly faceted. Some of the facets are much more subtle than others which frustrates counting the total number. At the wider end the diameter is c.9.4mm. c.3.7mm from this terminal the diameter has flared out to 15.2mm. It then contracts gradually to 8.6mm diameter c.2.4mm before the o…

A conical lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 54.19g (1.91oz) and has a height of 20.6mm. In profile the weight has a trapezoidal shape and a sub-circular cross-section of c.23.0mm diameter at the base tapering to 17.8mm at the top. A perforation passes through the approximate centre of the weight on the height axis. At the flat base of the weight this opening is oval 4.7mm x 3.9mm. At the irregular but mostly flat top the opening is not open but blocked, possibly with a mix of pale brown soil and or rusted iron, possibly with some lead from the slig…

A biconical lead weight. Weights of this form are generally thought to be Roman but the date is uncertain as these can be found on multi-period sites. The weight has a biconical profile and sub-circular shape when viewed from above or below, probably originally circular but now miss-shapen. The remains of an iron attachment loop or some other means of suspension are present in the miss-shapen apex end. In its current condition the weight has a height of 35.2mm including the iron remains. The original diameter, on the well preserved axis, is 42.7mm and on the miss-shapen …

A conical weight of unknown date. Weight is 12.40g (0.44oz), the diameter at base is 19.6mm from which the walls taper to 7.1mm at the top. Height is 9.0mm. A straight walled cylindrical hole of 3.9mm diameter passes through the approximate centre of the artefact vertically (from flat base to tapered top). This is more likely to have been used as a weight for weighing how heavy something was, rather than as a spindle whorl.

A copper-alloy discoidal trade weight, weighing 6.69g (0.24oz). This artefact is circular in shape with a diameter of 20.5mm at the base. The walls flare out slightly giving a diameter of 21.3mm at the top. Viewed in profile the artefact's cross-section appears initially to be rectangular rather than the actual subtle inverted isosceles trapezium. The walls give the object a maximum height or thickness of 3.7mm. The centre of the upper surface is recessed by 1.9mm, the edge of the artefact forming a 1.8mm wide undecorated rim. The inner edge of the rim slants diagonally from t…

A conical lead weight of unknown date. This artefact weighs 40.30g (c. 1.42 oz), has a height of 21.0mm and circular base diameter of 22.3mm. The base is flat and the walls gradually taper to the conical apex. There is no decoration on any part of this artefact. It is uncertain whether a suspension loop was originally present at the top of the weight. No remains of a suspension loop are clearly visible. However, the top of the weight is slightly deformed and use of a magnet does not reveal the presence of any magnetic pull to suggest the remains of any iron present. Found o…

A lead plumb bob or weight of other function (such as a steelyard weight) of unknown date. This lead object weighs 116.99g (39.4oz). It has a flattened oval end measuring 28.1mm x 26.4mm and a length of 27.8mm. From the flattened end the artefact tapers to a rounded dome. The external surface of the dome is undecorated but covered with some grooves and pitted dents, the result of slight damage. The domed shape somewhat resembles a thimble or Medieval bee-hive. At the flattened end there is an oval depression with wide 'U' shaped profile at the centre. This has an approximate d…

A cylindrical lead object, most probably used as a weight. This artefact weighs 67.38g (c.2.38oz) and has a length of 22.9mm. One end has a subtle convex curved transverse terminal with a diameter of 19.8mm. The walls of the weight taper slightly to a flat transverse terminal at the opposing end, which has a diameter of 18.6mm. All of the surfaces are relatively smooth and no evidence of decoration or means of attachment or suspension are visible. Such items are extremely difficult to date unless found within sealed archaeological contexts during excavation. As such it has not be…

A sub-square shaped lead object presumed to have been used as a weight. Alternatively this item might possibly have been used as a gaming piece. The artefact weighs 12.92g (0.46oz) and measures 21.4mm x 19.5mm. It has a rectangular cross-section and thickness of 4.6mm. What is assumed to be the reverse surface, is flat and undecorated. The upper surface is flat however it has either moulded, impressed or incised markings. These markings are indistinct and it is uncertain whether they represent an intentional design or not. Each of the sides of this object are indented slightly, the up…

A biconical lead weight of uncertain date. The artefact has a length of 24.0mm and weighs 28.92g (1.02oz). The weight has a sub-circular cross-section, with a maximum diameter of 18.2mm. The object tapers in diameter away from this centre girth to c.10.7mm and 9.6mm. No decoration is visible on the external surface of the weight. A sub-oval aperture passes through the centre of this object. It is partially filled with dried mud and this contributes to the recorded weight of the artefact. The presence of this mud prevents description of the walls of the aperture as it passes longitudin…

A lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact has an elongated oval shape with sub-oval cross-section and transverse flattened ends. This weight weighs 31.00g (1.09oz) and has a length of 27.6mm. The mid point has a girth of 16.2mm x 14.7mm diameter. This gradually reduces to 9.1mm x 9.5mm at one end and 11.1mm x 8.9mm at the other. Lead is a heavy but soft metal and as a result can change shape under its own weight. The sub-oval cross-section is partially due to a flattened area of damage on one side of the object. This flattened, and possibly scraped, area has a length of c.11.1mm …

A large lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 101.98g (c.3.60oz) is hemispherical in shape with a diameter of 38.3mm and depth of 19.1mm. The change in angle between the domed and flat surfaces is gently rounded edge. None of the surfaces show any obvious decoration. However, at the approximate centre of the flat surface there is the remains of an iron component. This component appears to be a very worn break, which is level with the lead surface. This is likely to be the remains of a suspension loop or hook. The original presence of a suspension attachment is suggestive…

A lead weight of uncertain date. The weight has a sub-rectangular shape with a length of 30.0mm and maximum width of 14.0mm. The artefact has a sub-rectangular cross-section, with rounded edges, and a thickness of 3.9mm. At one end, the top of the object, there is a sub-circular aperture of c.3.8mm diameter set in from the artefact's edge by 2.1mm. This aperture would have been used to suspend the weight, possibly though not conclusively suggesting that the weight may have been used with a steel-yard. The top end of the artefact is rounded and this narrows the object's width to 10.6mm…

A sub-circular lead weight of 38.6mm diameter and 9.4mm thickness. The object weighs 88.62g (3.13oz). This artefact has a roughly 'D' shaped cross-section being flatter on the reverse and slightly domed on the decorated upper surface. The decorative surface is unclear but seems to consist of a cross, the four quarters between the arms being recessed below the surface of the arms and outer circular border. Close observation reveals that a possible crescent, or possibly a damaged pellet, is present within one of the recessed quarters. A pellet or possibly a line of three pellets is pres…

A small lead weight weighing 6.79g (0.24oz) of unknown date. This artefact has a circular shape of 17.0mm diameter. The reverse is flat and the sides taper in to an upper diamter of 12.8mm. Although the top should be described as flat the object gives the impression of being less flat on the upper surface than the base. This is probably a result of the break of slope between the edges and upper surface being gradual rather than abrupt. The weight has a height of 3.8mm.
