Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small fragment of tertiary debitage - most probably a core-rejuvination flake. The dorsal face has a series of very shallow parallel sided flake removal scars suggesting it has been knapped from the tip of a pyramidical later mesolithic core to rejuinate / refresh the working area and allow for flaking in a different direction. This form of waste is classically dated to the late Mesolithic period (4000-3000 BC). The flake has a mid grey colour. Length 12.3mm, Width 10.7mm, Thickness 3.8mm, Weight 0.3g.

Flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present. The external edge on the ventral face has been retouched to form a cutting / scraping tool. The distal end has been deliberately snapped. The blade also shows signs of abrasion in the ploughsoil resulting in direct percussion damage along one edge (which looks similar to retouch albeit very disorganised). The blade is a mid grey colour. It measures: .Length 18.4mm, Width 13.5mm…

Heavily eroded and abraded flint blade of later Mesolithic date (5000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both lost through deliberate snapping. The original edges are lost andthe dorsal face has a jagged and irregular profile. Triangular shaped flake of teriary debitage. The edges of the flake are slightly faceted - possibly suggesting that this is a rejuvination flake from a flint core. The edges though are uneven and therefore are not the classical faceted shape expected for such flakes. The flint is a mid grey brown colour. It measures 16.6mm long, 12.6mm wide, 3.3mm thick and weighs 0.7grams.

Large relatively thick chunk / flake of tertiary debitage. The flakes is triangular in plan and section. The long - slightly curved edge - has abrupt retouch creating a serrated edge - it is possible that this is a result of movement in the ploughsoil rather than deliberate desin / use. A secondary flake of debitage of probable Neolithic date. The flake is heavily plough damaged, but one small area of neat removals along one edge suggests that this waste flake was reworked to form a poor quality scraper. The flint is a mottled grey colour. Small blade like flake of tertiary debitage of probable earlier Neolithic date (3500 - 2500 BC). The flake is an irregular rectangular shape and is formed on a mottled grey coloured flint. The upper edge is snapped and a number of vertical flake scars are present on the dorsal face. The ventral face is unworked. The long edges are feathered with abrupt retouch - although this is most likely to be as a result of movement in the ploughsoil - ratherthann deliberate reworking. The triangular tip from an arrowhead of uncertain Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3500 - 2100 BC). The tip is possibly from a barbed and tanged arrowhead - although due to the fragmentary nature of the flake it is difficult to be sure. The arrowhead has been formed on a tertiary flake of mottled mid grey white coloured flint. The external - triangular edges are neatly retouched with delecate rippled flaking. The dorsal face is heavily retouched with long parallel flake scars / removals - whilst the ventral has very small neat removals immediately on the edge. Generally both the ve…
