Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint axehead. A flaked axehead. Made on a nodule of pale grey-brown flint, now patinated to matt off-white and with iron staining along the flake ridges. Flaked on both faces from the edges, butt and cutting edge. All the cortex has been removed. The side edges are largely straight. It has a wide, slightly convex, cutting edge formed by flake removals from the edge into the body of the axehead. The axe tapers to the butt and has a lentoid cross section. There is some slight damage to the butt.

The notches forming the barbs are curved and relatively shallow. One face has invasive, scalar pressure flaking along both edges. The other face has some invasive pressure flaking but less regularly applied around a pre-exisiting deeper flake scar. There is slight damage to the tip.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint core. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of dark grey pebble flint with a glossy, mottled blue-white patina. There is some abraded iron-stained cortex remaining. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple converging bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single platform. The edges of the core show signs of deliberate platform edge abrasion.

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a partially naturally fractured tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, brown-grey flint with a paler beige patina. There are areas of cortex and sub-cortex on both faces, but substantially less on the naturally fractured face. The worked face has multiple semi-invasive flake removals at the cutting edge and along the sides. The other, naturally fractured face, there is some more haphazard flaking, perhaps aimed at thinning the body and creating a viable striking platform. It appears …

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces , particularly around the edge of the butt. The cutting edge is unfinished and has some post-depositional damage. It was probably squared and was formed by long, invasive, longitudinal flaking. The sides of the axehead taper from the cutting edge to the broad, rounded butt. The flaking along the edges is fairly regular, creating a zig zag.&n…

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, pale grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces. The cutting edge is unfinished. It is crudely rounded with some short, longitudinal flaking to create the edge. This has been unsuccessful in removing a steeply angled facet on one face which would preclude use of the axehead in it's existing form. The sides of the axehead are tapering from the cutting edge to the thinned, rounded butt. The flakin…

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on mottled, opaque light grey flint. No cortex remaining. The surfaces have a blue-white patina and some iron staining on the ridges. The cutting edge is unfinished. It is crudely rounded with cross body flaking to create the edge. The sides of the axehead are tapered from the cutting edge to the thin butt which has been obscured by an oblique post-depositional break. The flaking along the edges is regular creating a zig-zag finish. They have been slightly abraded in manufactur…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large flint blade flake. An elongate flake of light brown-grey opaque flint with sparse mottles. The surface has some light, semi-matt patination. There is an area of thick nodule cortex at the distal end. At the proximal end is a narrow striking platform with a low, diffuse bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The bulb develops into wide, low waves of percussion to the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face has two, large, parallel flaking scars from previous blade removals. The flake has a triangular cross section.

A large flint end-scraper. Made on a secondary flake of dark grey and red-brown mottled flint. There is an area of abraded nodule cortex on the dorsal face. The dorsal face has a milky blue0white patina. At the proximel end there is a small striking platform with a low, diffuse bulb of percussion on the ventral face There are large waves of percussion running to the distal end. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A bi-facially worked flint implement. Probably a small handaxe. It is now cordate in shape, but the edge damage means this is not certain and it is possible it was originally a more Boute Coupé-like form. The handaxe has been made on a large flake of mid grey flint, giving it a plano-convex profile. There is heavy, off-white patination over both faces, that on the dorsal face is slightly thicker and more yellowed. There is iron staining along many of the flake ridges. There is a small area of basal cortex on the dorsal face. There are several areas of mo…

Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large flint hammerstone. A rounded, sub-speroidal piece of mid grey-brown flint with a low gloss patina and iron staining. There are areas of use wear (battering) on much of the surface around the "equator" of the speroid with a few areas on the "poles" where the object was held in use. These retain off-white nodule cortex. This object is probably prehistoric, but such stones have also been found in later contexts (e.g. Roman) and it is difficult to be certain of the date.

A crude flint end scraper. Made on a tertiary flake of patchy grey flint. It has a matt patina. There is a low bulb of percussion and a small striking platform at the proximal end and faint waves of percussion on the ventral face. On the dorsal face are several flake removal scars and angular fractures (probably due to the low quality of the flint). The tip of the distal end has a small area of abrupt, irregular retouch creating a working edge.
