Post Medieval (late 16th or 17th century) buckle: A cast copper alloy asymmetrical double looped buckle frame. One loop is trapezoidal and the other semi-circular with a trefoil protrusion extending on the outer edge of this loop. The central strap bar has traces of iron staining, perhaps suggesting the pin was made of iron, otherwise the pin is missing. The reverse of the buckle is flat. The surface of the buckle frame has a light green matte surface. The buckle measures 19.9mm long, 13.79mm wide and weighs 1.56g. Several similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database, …

Post-medieval copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle frame is broadly similar to that of Whitehead (2003) Nos. 610, 616 and 617. It has a central iron spindle in-situ, which is now encased in a mass of rust. The spindle presumably rests in holes drilled into the top and bottom internal edges. These holes do not penetrate to the outer edge. The pin and chape are missing. The outside edges are convex externally (although one has lost its tip to abrasion or wear) and bi-concave internally. The top and bottom external edges are concave. The buckle curves rearward gently and symmetrically …
