Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy stud in rather abraded condition, a round, flat head and the stump of an integral round-sectioned shank on the reverse. The front is engraved with six radial lines, two of the angles between which are narrower than the other four. In addition there are six visible edge notches and a ring of seven punched ring-and-dots. The reverse is recessed behind a very slight circumferential ridge. What remains of the shank, extant length 2mm, diameter 2.2mm, suggests it did not taper. Head diameter and thickness 12 and 1mm. No parallel has been noted. Possibly Late Roman.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sheet copper alloy "paper-clip" rivet. Such objects were most commonly used for the repair of metal vessels. Most are likely to date to the medieval or post-medieval period, but some are earlier, such as examples from Late Saxon contexts at Flixborough (Rogers, N. in Evans and Loveluck 2009, 115-7). This a small example, 12.5 x 7.5mm. c.1300 - c.1700.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Half of a medieval to post-medieval double-looped copper alloy buckle frame, one of two separate roughly U-shaped strip loops, now somewhat distorted, which would have been riveted to an iron bar, rust from which remains in holes at both hammered ends. Copper alloy probable buckle pin. Lenticular shaped pin with a semi-oval end tapering to a long triangular point. Approximately one third of the way from the oval end a pair of symmetrical haunched arms project, one to either side of the pin body. The arms initially rise away from the pointed end then turn down 90 degrees towards it. The down-turned section has a trifid-shaped outside edge. As a buckle pin the lack of a frame attachment loop is conspicuous; however there is a short flat section at the tip of the oval end from which a loop may have detached, albeit this appears to be s…
