A fragment of a wheel thrown coarseware closed form vessel, probably a jar, dating to the Roman period, c. AD 200-400.
The fragment is a base fragment, namely a foot ring, and is markedly unfinished on its flattened underside. It has a thickly curving rounded edge to the base, and above this are two cordons with a deep channel between them, in which further slender incised lines lie. It is made of a pale buff oxidised fabric, which nonetheless maintains a slender strip of grey at its core. It is micaceous, with a slightly sandy texture on the inner surface. There are traces of a…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy buckle of late medieval to post medieval date, c. AD 1350-1550.
The buckle frame survives, the pin is missing. It is single looped, and trapezoidal in shape, with an irregular outer edge created by the outer vertical side gently curving inwards before returning to its original position and rejoining the opposing horizontal sides. There are multiple small incisded grooves around the buckle frame, which are positioned at a diagonal angle away from the centre.
Whitehead (1996: 30) illustrates a similar example, no. 170, which he dates to AD 1350-1550…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of post medieval date, c. AD 1650-1720.
The buckle is double looped and rectangular in shape. It is missing its pin, and the central bar is broken at its centre but remains broadly in position. The left lobe is rectangular in shape, while the right is bilobed. This is created by an internally facing knop which rises gently from the doming vertical side of the frame. The opposite vertical side of the frame is straight. It is rectangular in section, apart from on the right hand vertical side of the frame which is D-shaped in cross section.

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of post medieval date, c. AD 1650-1720.
The buckle is double looped and rectangular in shape. It is missing the drilled spindle and pin. It is D-shaped in section. The two loops are both bilobal in shape, with this created by the thickening at the centre of the vertical sides of the frame.

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of post medieval date, c. AD 1550-1650.
The buckle is double looped with a slender central bar. It is flattened in cross section and fragile. The two loops are both bilobal in shape, but this is subtle. The frame is marked by vertical lines framing the central bar at its apex and nadir.
