An incomplete Post Medieval or modern copper alloy button dating to cAD 1750 - 1900. This is the front or top face of a two or three part circular button. All else is missing. On it is the embossed image of an animal running right, possibly a hare or deer, with the ground indicated also. The whole scene is enclosed in a raised circular border at the edge of the button. The item has a small raised flange to hold it to the base of the button where there would have been a loop to sew it to the fabric of the garment. It is very dark brown in colour.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MODERN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Post Medieval or modern copper alloy mount dating to perhaps c AD 1650 - 1900 or even later. It is a metal plate in the form of a coopered barrel, with a central circular boss and two sets of three parallel transverse raised ridges near the top and base, indicating iron bands. Although indistinct, the photographs indicate that the edges of the barrel are bent a little inwards to give a three dimensional impression. The reverse shows a small circular plate in the centre, part of the fixing for the boss, and what appear to be six domed rivet heads., one in each corner and on…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a small tanged copper alloy spearhead of Bronze Age date, within the Arreton metalworking assemblage, Needham Period 4, c. 1700 - c.1500 BC.
The fragment is leaf shaped, with the original tip damaged and then worn to a rounded apperance. From the tip the head flares to its widest point before narrowing to the stub of a flattened tang which appears to have extended and may have been rectangular in shape. There is a markedly raised central midrib on both faces, and these extend along the full length of the surviving fragment.
While initially reported as an arrowh…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper strap fitting, probably a belt mount, dating from the late medieval to early post medieval period, c. AD 1400-1600.
The object is flattened in cross section and appears an irregular lozenge from the reverse view, but the terminal is revealed as trefoliate when viewed from the front. This designation of the sides is due to the appearance of two rivets, which are neat circles on the front side, and crude and flattened irregularly shaped smudges on the reverse. A slender tapering tongue, possibly intended to act as a hook, extends from the narrow end of the object, and is …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy double looped rectangular buckle probably of Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1400. The buckle has a central bar with a knop at each end, and expanded outer edges which take the form of a straight bar along the outer edge, rounded in cross-section and forming a knop at each end, so in each corner of the frame. The pin is missing. Dimensions: length 17.5mm, width 13.2mm, thickness 2.1mm, weight 1.30g. This unusual design of buckle is similar to, but with more angular loops than number 340 and similar on page 58 of Whitehead. The small size could suggest it is a spur buckle…

A copper alloy ring, probably a harness fitting, dating from the Roman to post medieval period, c. AD 43-1800.
The ring is circular in shape and in section, with a slightly flattened upper surface. It is roughened and pitted, but two distinctly raised nubs survive at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions, possibly indicating the points above which attached leather straps should not be positioned.
Measurements: 49.5mm diameter, 8.2mm width, 7.6mm thickness, weight 26.16g.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post medieval copper alloy knee or shoe buckle, dating to c. AD 1750-1800.
The buckle is square in shape with rounded corners and a drilled central spindle with an ornate fork, which has two prongs which curve towards one another, joining and then flaring outwards. At the centre of this flared area is the inscription I.SANDERS, presumably a maker's mark rather than that of the owner. It is in Latin capitals, but the appearance suggests a later 18th century date for this buckle.
Measurements: 37mm length, 36.8mm width, 4.9mm thickness, weight 14.19g.

A post medieval copper alloy harness mount, dating to c. AD 1600-1800.

An incomplete and compressed post medieval fob seal dating to c.AD 1700-1900.
The originally oval seal matrix, which would once have contained an intaglio or seal, is now extremely compressed and almost flattened. The boss has a rounded profile and proceeds upwards in three distinct layers, giving it a beehive like appearance. The upper and lower of these layers are marked with deeper decorative grooves. The suspension loop is decorated with multiple swollen lobes, and a small rectangular knop which may have once been hollow and an additional point of suspension.

An incomplete silvered copper alloy button of post medieval date, c. AD 1800-1900, depicting the obverse of an issue of Septimius Severus (AD 145-211).
The object is circular in shape and flattened in cross section. The soldered loop on the reverse is now missing and it is plain. The design on the obverse depicts a laureate bust of Septimius Severus facing right, cuirassed. The bust is similar to that on denarii of the emperor, but the inscription is not accurate as the titles of the Emperor are usually abbreviated. Buttons imitating Roman coins are known from the 19th century, …
