The rowel from a medieval copper alloy spur. It is in the form of a sub-circular disc 62.4mm in diameter and 3.4mm thick, originally consisting of 20 radiating pointed rods of c.17mm length around a solid central disc of c.25mm diameter, with incised radiating lines defining the continuation of the sides of the rods to the centre. All but nine of the rods are now missing. In the middle of the rowel is a perforation which is very worn at one side - it was presumably originally a 5.5mm diameter round hole but is now keyhole shaped and 10.5mm wide.
The surface is much abraded and th…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead weight with central perforation, of unknown date. A 46.6mm diameter cast solid lead disc with a flattened underside and an irregular upper face - the thickness varies from 9.7 to 7.2mm. The upper surface has a broad rim within which is moulded decoration surrounding a countersunk central perforation. Unfortunately the decoration is worn and I am unable to tell what it may represent. The reverse is plain apart from a small shallow hole near the centre which may be a blowhole from the casting process. The object has a uniform light grey patination.
The item weighs 111.7g, so c…

Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type, probably dating to c.75 - 150AD.
The brooch is missing its spring, pin, most of one wing and the terminal from the other, the foot and the catch plate.
The bow is humped, with a D shaped cross-section and a plain flat underside. The upper face is decorated with a central ridge which has transverse grooves giving a beaded effect. This is flanked by parallel grooves either side and tapers to an old break which has removed the catch plate and foot.
The spring case is damaged and a Mackreth class cannot be…

Incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy openwork sword belt fitting. The extant part is the right-hand side of the complete artefact. It consists of a nearly symmetrical (about a vertical axis) plate with notches and lobes on the sides and top, in a foliate style which complements the engraved foliate design that covers the front face within a beaded border. Projecting from the bottom is a circular loop for the suspension of the sword scabbard. Just above the centre of the plate is a single rivet-hole. The two main lobes at the top and bottom of the right-hand side have counterparts on …

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman brooch of Mackreth's headstud type 5b, dating to circa AD 75-175.
The brooch has a circular-sectioned winged head with presumably an internal axis bar still complete, although not visible as the coils are still intact. There are approximately eight coils intact along with the remains of a central hinged pin. The pin is now missing. There is a circular protrusion on the apex of the head just above the coils.
At the head of the bow is an oval head-stud. Below the headstud, the remainder of the bow is decorated with four rectangular cells. The…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
A worn copper-alloy Roman coin, possibly a sestertius of Titus (AD 79-81) or Nerva (AD 96-98), dating to the period c.AD 69-96 (Reece period 4). Reverse type depicting a large S C. Probably mint of rome.
This coin is of uncertain type. The apparent left facing bust is unclear, although perhaps looks Neronian or Flavian, similarly the reverse legend is largely illegible. Although these are Julio-Claudian bronze types with large SC reverses (e.g. for Tiberius and Caligula), these are typically for asses and even in its current state, this coin is larger and heavier. More plausible…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post Medieval copper alloy one-piece discoidal button or cloak fastener. It has a convex front, concave back and a drilled rectangular section shank. The head is decorated with a voided saltire with central circle-and-dot motif, annulets and crescents in each quadrant form a saltire. The shank retains some oxidised iron. This suggests that it was one of a pair of cloak fasteners, joined together with an iron wire linkage, as discussed in Read (2010) page 44.
Diameter: 22.7mm (max). Thickness (head): 5.4mm. Height (including shank): 9.1mm. Weight: 7.28g.

County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy "beehive" or "heavy duty" thimble of later Medieval date, circa AD 1400-1550. The thimble is complete, although it has suffered some damage to the rim. The thimble is broadly circular in plan with a domed top. The walls of the thimble are almost parallel however they flare outwards slightly to the rim. The sides and the domed top have a series of indentations around them that are broadly sub-circular in shape. The indentations are all of a similar size and are unevenly spaced apart in uneven rows. The rim protrudes slightly from the body of the thimble. The thimble has …
