County: North Yorkshire

A complete lead-alloy musket ball or pistol shot of Post-Medieval date, c.1600 - 1900. The object is spherical with a flattened cylindrical band around the circumference. Diameter: 15.6mm; Weight: 21.5g. It is difficult to precisely assign projectiles to specific calibres of gun because most excavated shot will have lost weight, there was a huge variety of firearms and balls imperfectly manufactured, and because lead varies in weight. The weight of the shot suggests they may have been meant for firing from a weapon such as a carbine.

A fragment from a Roman fineware vessel, probably a bowl, dating to c. AD 200-400. The fragment is a rim sherd, with the rim itself thickened and exaggerated to create an outer lip. The sherd is formed of a red-orange fabric, which has a grey core. It is slippery and slightly powdery in texture, with small micaceous inclusions. It is most likely an example of an Oxfordshire red/brown slipped ware, with a charact…
