Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete copper alloy finger ring. Sub oval 8mm wide bezel with shoulders tapering to a 2mm circular section hoop. The periphery of the bezel is raised in a rim to form an internal recess or setting to accommodate an insert which is now missing. The floor of the oval recess is rough and without design. Examination of this surface under a macroscope reveals several tiny spheres of silvery metal suggesting the insert was not a gem but rather metallic and originally soldered into place. There is no archaeological context to help provide a date to this ring, and the missing insert makes…

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably a Bronze Age turquoise green/blue faience annular bead. It is irregularly shaped, sub circular in plan and in section. There is no apparent decoration. To make it the the molten faience would have been twisted and rolled around a rod that would then be withdrawn leaving the central hole. Elizabeth Foulds says that the bead is not distinctly Iron Age or Roman but if it is faience then Bronze Age is a possibility. If faience it may well have been manufactured in Egypt as the bead has a colour and surface texture typical of that area's beads and ushabti figurines. Though not pos…

Probably part of a damaged Post Medieval lead or lead alloy toy whirligig or buzz disc. The toy consists of a flat disc of sheet lead alloy, or lead, with a serrated edge though this is now largely lost. The completed whirligig would have had two adjacent sub oval string holes near the centre. There is possible sighting indentation but the perforation has not been made, though this seems rather close to the edge and may represent an attempt at a repair. A similar whirligig has been recorded in Forsythe and Egan (2005), page 390, No 13.8. Dates to between c1600 and c1900 AD. The l…
