A complete but slightly abraded cast lead alloy oval shaped seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400). The seal matrix is sub-oval (oval with a single pointed lower edge) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. On the reverse face of the seal is a projecting heavily D shaped lug which is not pierced - it is presumably via this that the seal was appled and removed from the waxen impression. From this lug a single pointed arrow descends which is bisected by a saltire cross - all formed from raised cast ridges and all of which are abraded. The design on the front face of the matrix …

A large worn, flat lead non-heraldic personal seal matrix of Medieval date c.AD 1200-1300. Description: The matrix is flat and circular in plan. On the front is an engraved two level tree, ending in simple split branches. This is surrounded by a legend which starts at twelve o'clock and runs retrograde (anti-clockwise) around the matrix. It is executed fairly crudely which makes the inscription difficult to read, it appears to read "+SIGILL EDITHE' FILLI EWIN". This probably translates as 'Seal of Edith daughter of Edwin'. The patronymic (the parent's name) is uncertain. The last…
