A worked flint axehead of Neolithic date (c. 3500 - c. 2100 BC). The implement has been extensively knapped into a sub-oval cross section, with a tapering plan. It consists of a large terminal with a cutting face. The opposing terminal is broadly round with some cortex remaining on a prominent nodule, possibly indicative of an unfinished implement. The tool exhibits an asymmetric cross section, where one side of the central chord is flatter than the other. The edges have retouch in places. The flint is a mixture of greys, ranging from lighter to darker. All faces exhibit some orange i…

A lead weight or gaming piece of uncertain date. This artefact is sub-circular in shape with a maximum diameter of 23.1mm. The cross-section is sub-oval to sub-rectangular with flattened convex surfaces and rounded convex edges. One surface appears to have been plain, undecorated and relatively flat. However, pitted areas of surface damage are now present. The opposing surface has moulded relief decoration. This decoration is unclear, however study with use of a raking light suggests that the design may be an image of Britannia seated left, with shield leaning against her to the lower…

A fragment of medieval to post-medieval (1400-1600) copper alloy spoon, consisting of the terminal and short section of stem only, and probably related to 'apostle' spoons.
The terminal depicts a bust, rather than the usual complete figure, and it is apparently female rather than male with a veil to the back of the head reaching to the base of the shoulders. This is decorated to the reverse of the object with parallel diagonal grooves. To the front the head is oval in shape with incised oval eyes, long neck and wide top-of-shoulders. The bust sits in a D-shaped 'basket', curved to t…

A medieval (1200-1400) copper alloy gilt cruciform horse harness suspension mount for a separate pendant, incomplete insofar as it is missing three separate rivets. The gilding survives largely to the edges of the object only and within a decorative grooved X at the centre of the four arms.
Three of the arms are of roughly equal length, although one of these (a cross-arm) is significantly shorter than the other two, by 2mm. The arms are triangular in cross-section with a flattened apex and flat to the reverse. Each ends in a circular, flattish terminal divided from the main arm by a…

An incomplete, silver object of uncertain date and function. Possibly the head and upper shaft of a medieval dress pin, c.AD 1200-1300. The upper stone is heptagon in shape with seven sides with sloping, chamfered edges. It is not clear how the glass has been stuck to the frame - other examples show evidence of a white paste (BH-85BA81). The blue glass is held in place by four "claws", one of which is …

Fragment of a copper-alloy Bronze Age socketed spearhead. The handle socket is entirely missing from an old brittle-break at the point where it would have originally joined the blade. The pronounced midrib continues for the full length of the blade with an internally round socket extending just over halfway towards the tip. Externally the midrib contours smoothly to form the wings of the spearhead blade, the profile of which has a sub-lozengiform shape, reaching a maximum width at the approximate halfway point. The profile of the blade wings from the socket to the widest point has a s…

An incomplete medieval (1200-1400) copper alloy shield-shaped horse harness pendant, extremely worn but with traces of red enamel on one face and a fleck of gilding on both faces. The loop (which is turned through 90 degrees) has worn through at its point of suspension; the shield is slightly concavo-convex in profile.
The red enamel survives raised on metal which has otherwise lost its original patina; this is on the concave surface. Traces of very thin lines of red enamel suggest a lozenge at the centre and base of the shield-shape, superimposed on a cross. However this description…

A copper alloy end cap from a scale tang knife dating from the early post medieval period, about AD 1500-1700. The cap is of the hoof type, of sub-trapezoidal shape and oval section. The faces are decorated with transverse ribbed lines in moulded relief, which continue around the cap, representing a horse's hoof and shoe. The top (which is the base of the hoof) has four punched dots which represent the horseshoe nails. There are the remains of the iron tang in the slot where it has joined the cap; these continue up both sides of the cap. Compare DOR-53D059 and SOM-C4F921 which notes t…
