A cast lead-alloy lid handle from a tobacco box or jar of post-medieval date (c.1650-1800).
Description: The handle is sub-oval and floral in design, having eight 'petals' with a central raised boss. A collared fixing shank, circular in section, for attaching the handle to the lid protrudes from the bottom.
Measurements: Height 20.8mm; width 24.6 mm and weight 22.4g.
Discussion: Similar examples are illustrated in G Bailey's 'Finds identified', 2000, page 62, which he dates to the middle of the 17th century and states that the lead boxes were used to keep moist tobacco …

The sole close parallel noted was found in the same field (NMS-8D9F72). Diameter 10 - 11mm. Thickness 3.5mm. 14th century.
