An incomplete miniature copper alloy plate brooch dating to the Roman period, AD 70-150. The plate and attachment loop for the pin survive, but the pin itself is missing, as is a possible head loop whose presence is hinted at by a small spur of copper alloy that survives attached to the pin loop. There is a hint of a surviving foot plate on the reverse, but this is largely missing. The plate is rectangular in cross section, with two flat sides, and takes the form of a curved trapezium, with a short top edge measuring 11.9mm and a longer bottom edge measuring 14.2mm. It is decora…

A fragment of a post medieval copper alloy purse frame dating from 1450-1550. The frame is circular in cross section, and curves along its length. At one terminal is a U-shaped attachment point where the frame would once have connected to the bar. At the other terminal is the break. No sewing holes survive on this fragment. It is covered with a powdery lighter green patina which shows signs of bronze disease. Other examples included on the database are DENO-FE2AE0, which has the same circular frame and shows how this component would have attached to the bar. It is 79.6mm lon…

Copper-alloy eagle and hare plate brooch of Roman date (c. 50 - 150 AD). The brooch takes the form of an eagle standing behind a hare, pinioning it down with its talons and rending at its head with its beak. The eyes of both beasts are represented by circular depressions and details such as the wing of the eagle and the hare's ear are rendered by subtle grooves; all in all, the design is elegantly executed. The bodies of both beasts are rounded on the outer face and convex on the back face. A rectangular catchplate extends from the back of the hare and a hinge lug extends from the bac…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Blackburn with Darwen
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight of medieval or post-medieval date (c. 1300 - 1700 AD). The weight has been formed by pressing a coin into the surface of a circular disc of lead. Unfortunately, the impression is shallow and the surface of the object is worn, which means that the coin cannot be identified with any certainty. The size and indication of gothic lettering suggests that the coin will have been of late medieval to post-medieval date. The object has a white patina. It is 35.07mm in diameter and 8.06mm in thickness. The diameter of the coin is 28.15mm. The object weighs 61.24g.

There are a number of similar objects recorded on the database, although the design on t…

A medieval, copper-alloy mount. Description: The mount comprises a cast copper-alloy, rectangular bar, D-shaped in section, attached along the upper edge of the front of a sheet copper-alloy plate by a central copper-alloy rivet. The rivet extends from the reverse of the mount where it would have attached to a strap or similar. It was originally secured behind by a lozenge-shaped, sheet copper-alloy rove, still in-situ. The plate is shaped to fit the bar at the top, narrowing and then becoming shield-shaped below. There is a further copper-alloy rivet passing through the lower part…
