Record ID: PUBLIC-168CF1
Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A tertiary flake of probable late Mesolithic date, 7000 - 4000BC. The flake is sub-rectangular in plan and section. There are two parallel flakes removed from the dorsal face, and there is very short, parallel, abrupt retouch to both edges. Retouch at the distil end has formed two notches, possibly for working arrow shafts.
The flake is pale mottled grey and translucent.
Length: 29.0mm, Width: 19.1mm, and Thickness: 3.0mm. Weight: 2.3g.

A collection of 4 chunks of worked flint of possible Mesolithic origin.
The flints all have multiple flake removal scars and have no evidence of retouch.
Chunk 1 is heavily re-corticated, indicative of being in the ground a relatively long time after being worked.
Chunk 4 is a pale semi-translucent flint, almost quartz-like. There is a shallow bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and a small lump of cortex on the distal end of the dorsal surface. It is possible that this is a core rejuvenation flake.

A collection of 8 chunks of worked flint of possible Mesolithic origin.
The flints all have multiple flake removal scars and have no evidence of retouch.
The chunks are all heavily re-corticated, indicative of being in the ground a relatively long time after being worked.

A collection of 3 burnt flint chunks of possible Mesolithic origin.
The flints all have multiple flake removal scars and have no evidence of retouch.
The chunks all show crazed cracking indicative of being burnt and two of them have areas of red colouring.
Chunk 1: Weight 5.5g, Length 18.52mm, Width 18.52mm, Thickness 12.16mm.
Chunk 2: Weight 3.9g, Length 27.33mm, Width 13.29mm, Thickness 8.80mm.

A collection of four flint cores of possible Mesolithic origin.
The flints are light brown with a creamy patina which ranges from a light to a complete covering.
Each core is sub conical with 3 or 4 parallel flake removal scars and were collected from a 500m stretch of coastal pathway.
Core 1: Weight 14.4g, Length 28.34mm, Width 22.50mm, Thickness 21.12mm.
Core 2: Weight 9.9g, Length 30.22mm, Width 18.68mm, Thickness 15.21mm.
Core 3: Weight 8.0g, Length 32.24 mm, Width 22.72mm, Thickness 16.17mm.
Core 4: Weight 4.3g, Length 25.17mm, Width 23.47mm, Thickness 9.63mm.

A tertiary flake of dark grey flint that resembles a thumbnail scraper of possible Mesolithic origin. This piece has no evidence of retouch but may be an abandoned attempt to produce a scraper. The ventral face is concave and has scars where flakes have been removed from the bulb of percussion. The dorsal face is convex and the striking platform is very jagged, there are some very narrow flake removal scars here which may indicate some attempt to dress the edge of the striking platform.
The flint has a light/pale covering patina.

Five flint chunks of possible Mesolithic origin.
Four of the pieces are secondary chunks with 30% to 50% cortex over a dark grey/brown semi-translucent flint. The fifth and smallest chunk is a grey/brown semi-translucent tertiary flint pointed at both ends.
Each piece has a number of flake removal scars but there are no clear striking platforms.
The largest chunk has some crushing along one edge that may indicate its use as a hammer stone.

Two flint cores of possible Mesolithic origin.
These flints have been heavily re-corticated following their original production suggesting a long period in the ground post production.
Both cores have flake removal scars at a variety of angles indicating multiple striking platforms.
Core 1: Weight: 11.6g, Length 33.18mm, Width 19.89mm, Thickness 16.82mm.
Core 2: Weight: 7.9g, Length 32.75mm, Width 23.39mm, Thickness 13.52mm.
