Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast oval weight, of rectangular section with rounded ends. One end is nicked, which may be provision for tied fastening, though weights of this form would more usually have an integrally cast or drilled apical loop. Patinated. The form is broadly comparable with that of line weights and net sinkers of medieval date, though this is smaller than most examples of this form. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500 Length: 31.4mm, Width: 11.6mm, Thickness: 9.1mm, Weight: 22.75gms

Copper alloy buckle fragment. Cast loop fragment, probably from one end of a double looped buckle with projecting grooved knops at its outer edges. Spots of shiny black material are probably relict traces of treatment with linseed oil or lacquer, an early post-medieval custom. Another fragment perhaps from the other end of the same buckle was also reported as NLM-8ED0DD. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1650 Length: 17.7mm, Height: 27.2mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 2.22gms

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped single looped buckle frame with an expanded and lightly bevelled outer edge and with a narrowed strap bar. Copper alloy probable vessel fragment. Cast leg from a vessel, probably originally facetted with five or six sides, of an unusual bent or crooked form. The upper end retains a fragment of the internal surface of the vessel, suggesting its bowl [of thickness 2.4mm] and legs were cast in a single operation. The function was initially suggested by thick relict patches of soot accumulated from use on a hearth. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Pale grey flint possible borer. Triangular flake with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, and with a bulb on its undulating ventral surface. The appearance of serrated edges may arise from fortuitous edge-on impacts, but the form appears to be deliberately tapered towards a point [now lost] Creamy patina suggests a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, while orange spots - more frequent than on the accompanying material - may suggest it subsequently became incorporated in gravel. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 28.1mm, W…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fine-grained grey sedimentary stone, possible rubber or polisher. A chipped and elongated water-rolled cobble, possibly smoothed on one flat face, chipped, probably more recently. Diagonal lines appearing on the flattened face are the bedding planes of the rock, perhaps here revealed by the use of the stone. This may be an improvised hone or smoother, both categories of object with a broad date range probably extending from the Bronze Age to the Early Medieval period. This was probably noticed and retrieved as a non-local stone, so at all events may have been imported to its find sp…

Flint debitage. Four small flakes with broad flakes struck from their dorsal sides.
