Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 3d, Plate 46, AD c. 50-400). The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical wings with perforated wing caps. The wings are undecorated. The axis bar and spring are copper alloy, and there are five coils. The pin is incomplete. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings/bow head there is a perforated lug which supports the chord. The bowhead is hump-like in profile with a moulding on either side. A complete copper-alloy button and loop fastener of Roman date, c.AD 100-200. Wild Class Vc variant. The head is a circular disc shape with a protruding central circular knop. An integral shank extends down from the reverse of the boss and bends at 90 degrees before splitting in to two arms before forming a triangular attachment loop. Roman (1st to 4th centuries) copper alloy pin: The pin head is an asymmetrical bi-conical which tapers towards the integral pin shaft. The shaft protrudes from the base of the pin head and only a fragment remains. The break is not recent. The pin has a well developed dark green patina. The pin measures 12.26mm long, 8.87mm diameter. It weighs 2.72g. The pin probably dates to the Roman period. It falls into the Cool typology Group 1, a knob head type. An incomplete copper alloy enamelled Roman zoomorphic plate brooch depicting a fish on a dish dating to the period c. AD 100 - 300. The pin is missing. The plate is pointed oval in shape with a series of projecting rounded lugs spaced at regular intervals around the edge of the plate, including one lug at each pointed end. An incomplete Polden Hill type brooch dating to the Roman period (C. AD 75-175). The head of the brooch, complete with wings is semi-cylindrical with closed, flat, end caps .It is 8mm thick. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The top of the head has the remains of the suspension loop for the spring and there is a worn rib decoration . An incomplete cast copper-alloy bell shaped stud of Allason-Jones type 1 dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-300). The stud consists of the upper sub-hemispherical, circular-sectioned, head only. Reverse: Two standing victories facing one another, holding round shield like wreath, inscribed in the centre: VOT/V/M[VL]T [X] with supporting column. Inscription: VIC[TORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE]. Mint: TR[P] (Trier). The overall condition of the coin is fine, though the obverse side has significantly more corrosion than the reverse.
