Lead alloy lid. A cylindrical lid from a vial with a moulded or stamped bordered motif on top. This might be viewed either as a schematic anchor, or, more intriguingly, as a stick-figure in a small cog-shaped boat with his arms raised, which could imply a quasi-medieval rendition of an imperilled mariner at prayer. However, such early dating is belied by screw thread within the lid. The edges of the object are facetted to enable a firm grip when the lid was to be opened or closed. A triangle of wrought iron, of possibly rounded section, with an apex formed by the union of the two ends of a narrow bar, turned over at right angles to the plane of the triangle; the section here is squared. This resembles the most primitive form of stirrup, though, as it survives, the object lacks provision for attachment of leathers. The good condition and mass of the object, indicating survival of a metal core, should point to a more recent date.
