An incomplete cast copper-alloy and iron linch pin of late Iron Age to Roman date, c.100BC-100AD.
Description: The head and peg/shank of the linch pin remains. The head is roughly of the 'vase shaped' variety although it is roughly globular at the top with a narrow neck and semi-hemispherical base. The base has incised decoration in wavey lines mostly obscured by rust and corrosion. A complete cast copper alloy toggle of dumbbell type, dating from the Late Iron Age to early Roman period (1st century BC - 1st century AD). The toggle consists of a solid cast cylindrical rod with discoidal terminals, which are decorated with a moulded broad shallow boss within bordering ring. From the centre of the rod projects a circular suspension loop, with a smaller circular moulding echoing that on both ends on the opposed face of the rod. Fragment of a cast copper-alloy cosmetic mortar of late Iron Age to Roman date. Only part of the bow and terminal loop survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The bow is of uncertain form, with the broken end U-shaped in cross-section. Underneath the surviving end of the bow is an integrally cast but broken circular loop with central circular aperture. The entire object has a green patina with corrosion pitting on many of the surfaces. See SF-699DD2 for a very similar fragment. Extant length is 24mm, 6mm in width, 11.1mm at terminal end, and weighs 2.5g.
