Cast copper-alloy zoomorphic stirrup terminal of late early-medieval date. The item is formed from a semi-cylindrical shaft which is hollow at the back. The shaft terminates in three small knops, and the bottom or base of the item is solid and slopes diagonally downward. An incomplete copper alloy stirrup terminal of early medieval date, c 11th century AD. The terminal has a hollow back, which would have enclose the lower arm of the stirrup (Williams 1997). The front of the terminal is zoomorphic, representing a beast's head with snout and tendrils, resembling the Ringerike style. One wall of the terminal has an old break, extending to the upper end. There is no apparent collar; this may be missing due to the break. The form resembles the snub-nosed types illustrated in Williams 1997, fig 2. Length 34.4 mm, width 11 mm, width 2.3 mm. Weight is 11.9 g

A broken and incomplete late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (c. 11th century AD). The hollow channel running along the reverse of the object would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The terminal appears to be of a simple, highly devolved zoomorphic design. The upper attachment end has been broken off. Below, there is a bulbous moulding which thins in a step as it travels down at an angle before narrowing into a rounded tip. Beyond the step the front of the head is decorated with a V-shaped engraved line, its po…
