Medieval copper alloy mount, 28mm in diameter, 7mm thick and weighing 10.09g. The mount is circular in form and rectangular in cross section. The object depicts a winged lion in gilded high relief standing on a flat object probably a gospel? The wings are cross hatched, as is the lions chest, and its tail? crosses between its hind legs and over its back. A cast copper-alloy book clasp (hook piece) of late Medieval date, probably 15th-16th century. The clasp is rectangular in plan, with stamped decoration and would probably attach to a leather strap. It would have extended further, and possible flared, but this part is missing. The hook is semi-cylindrical and 4mm in width. A silver-gilt Post Medieval hooked tag, dating from the 16th century, AD 1500 - 1600. The back plate is trefoil with a pinked or engrailed edge. A copper alloy rowel from a spur of Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1300 - 1700. It is in the form of a star with five points. There is a lanceolate moulding between each pair of points which projects to form a small pointed knop. The centre of the rowel is pierced with a small, circular hole for attachment to the remainder of the spur. The rowel has a patchy, light green patina. It is 42.3mm in diameter and 3.8mm thick. Only the lower bow, foot and catchplate survive, the rest of the brooch missing in an old break. The bow is 'D' shaped in section with a prominent longitudinal moulded ridge, the foot plain and the catchplate triangular with a rolled back edge that originally would have accomodated the pin. An Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy bead, probably dating to c. 800 BC - AD 100. The bead is circular in plan and biconical in cross section, with a circumferential ridge emphasised by slight incised lines. The bead has a large, central, circular perforation 6.2mm in diameter. Dimensions: diameter 15.1mm; thickness 7.3mm weight 5.14g. cf. BH-431B44 and SUR-14AA83, amongst others for similar examples on this database. A larger example, but of similar form, was excavated at Camerton and dated to c. 50 BC - AD 50 (Jackson 1990: 48 & plt. 14).
