Object type: HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy hook of likely post-medieval date, possibly part of a swivel hook. The hook is sub-square in section aside from the bulbous base which is sub-oval. The bulbous base of the hook has been truncated. The shaft, extending from the bulb, gradually tapers into a curve to form the hook, terminating at a point. This point may originally have extended further. The hook is possibly part of a swivel hook, however due to the incomplete nature of the find it is not possible to conclusively say. Swivel hooks were used for a wide variety of purposes to hold a variety of items…

Copper alloy probable finger ring. Cast probably D section band, its display side divided into seven fields by vertically incised lines, each field being occupied by curvilinear punched or incised lines, probably representing vegetal sprays. A possible fragment of a lead pencil, broken at one end. The fragment is sub-square in cross-section and rectangular in overall form. One end of the stylus appears to be truncated, while the other tapers to a four sided point. Where the object begins to taper, a central drilled perforation transects the object. Similar lead pencils have a long period of use, through the medieval and post-medieval periods. They appear designed to make a coloured mark, rather than leave a scratch. Parallels can be found at IOW-DBF235 and NLM-76F3B7, although both of these have the perforation at th…
