Object type: HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy hook of likely post-medieval date, possibly part of a swivel hook.
The hook is sub-square in section aside from the bulbous base which is sub-oval. The bulbous base of the hook has been truncated. The shaft, extending from the bulb, gradually tapers into a curve to form the hook, terminating at a point. This point may originally have extended further.
The hook is possibly part of a swivel hook, however due to the incomplete nature of the find it is not possible to conclusively say.
Swivel hooks were used for a wide variety of purposes to hold a variety of items…

Object type: PENCIL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible fragment of a lead pencil, broken at one end. The fragment is sub-square in cross-section and rectangular in overall form. One end of the stylus appears to be truncated, while the other tapers to a four sided point. Where the object begins to taper, a central drilled perforation transects the object.
Similar lead pencils have a long period of use, through the medieval and post-medieval periods. They appear designed to make a coloured mark, rather than leave a scratch. Parallels can be found at IOW-DBF235 and NLM-76F3B7, although both of these have the perforation at th…

Object type: JEWS HARP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy jew's harp of post-medieval date. The harp is mostly complete missing only the iron prong that was plucked to produce the note.
The object has an oval loop with two arms which taper to a point. The harp is worn with the arms being slightly bent and misshapen.
Jew or Jaw Harps have been around for many centuries with the most common found being of 17th or 18th Century date (although medieval examples are also discovered). The iron spring strip which was plucked on the instrument has usually rusted away (Bailey 2001, 76). This Jew harp bears a slight ferrous deposit…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Roman copper-alloy coin with considerable wear. The obverse depicts a left facing emperor with beard and no crown. It is not possible to conclusively identify who is depicted due to the coins condition; however they do bear a resemblance to Philip II, 247-249 AD (Sear 1981, 232).
The reverse has considerable wear and it is therefore not possible to identify any markings.
The margin of the coin, while present, has deteriorated too much to be eligible.

Object type: COIN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A silver halfpenny of medieval date. The obverse depicts a king, either Henry III, 1216-1272 or Edward I, 1272-1307.
The reverse of the coin depicts half of a voided long cross with three pellets in each quarter. Under Henry III the long cross was introduced in 1247 to help safe guard coins against clipping (a common practice at the time) (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 94). During Edward I rule, long crossed coins came in two variations; Group VI which were crude in style, and Group VII which were more refined. In 1279 long cross coinage was abandoned (Mitchell & Reeds 1997, 97).
