A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is irregular though broadly circular with a flat top and base and a central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn. The remains of a second partial weight of similar form is integral to the object suggesting a miscast. The metal has a mid-grey patina. The object is 25.9mm in diameter, 8.2mm thick and weighs 24.1g. The perforation is 6.6mm in diameter. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire

A flat, circular, cast lead weight, with moulded design on one side probably dating to around AD 1300 to 1700. The design has a raised rim and a raised design of a rectangular bar reaching across the diameter with a oval thickening at the centre. The weight is 406g, it is 73.25mm in diameter, and 13.9mm thick. There is signs of wear on one side of the weight which may be the reason as to why the weight doesnt fit to any known weight system. There is a possibility it could be a one pound weight using the averdepois weight system which uses 454g as 1 pound (Biggs and Withers, 2000, pg14).

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is cylindrical and stands upright, though slightly angled. The metal has a mid-yellow/white patina and is worn. The object is 9.3mm tall, 9.9mm in diameter and weighs 6.4g. Weights of a similar form have been identified from Early-Medieval contexts at Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire. Due to the lack of secure context for the current example dating it and other examples of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. This function is also not certain and the object may have served another purpose.

An assemblage of eleven handles from Medieval ceramic jugs dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. All the vessel fragments are made from a hard fabric of fine texture with frequent small grey grit and sand inclusions. Some have a pale slip and all have a yellow to olive green glaze, often on one face only. Many of the handles are decorated with deep grooves or ribbing. One has three rows of short, oblique grooves decorating the wall next to the handle. Some also have holes on the inner face, pushed through into the adjoining handle on the outer face. These probably ensure that the handle i…

The front of the object is moulded in three dimensions, but the reverse is flat and undecorated. The facial features are very crudely modelled but there appears to be a simple straight mouth, two hollows for the eyes and a distinctive squared nose. A Medieval lead circular uniface token of Powell type 14, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1500. A raised cross divides the decorated face into four equal quarters, with a pellet at the centre of each. Dimensions: diameter: c 21mm; 3.6mm thick; weight 8.96g. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date. Tokens of Powell's type 14 are thought to imitate Medieval pennies, and may therefore be of the same date.
