Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A spherical copper alloy crotal bell of around 32 mm diameter, similar to SUR-6E84B5 but not as ornate. The main body of the bell is a hollow sphere of two halves, the equator marked out by a raised ridge that is probably a remnant of the casting process. The upper half has a rectiliear loop for attachment to a suspension cord, along with two sound holes. The lower half has a central slit, marked at each end by a sound hole, one of which is now blocked. These would have originally allowed the note of the bell to sound clearly outside of the shell.
