An incomplete whetstone of probable early-medieval date (c. AD 800 - 1100). Description: The whetstone is formed from a very fine-grained, sedimentary, mica-rich stone. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan with tapering sides and is trapezoidal in cross section although there is significant post-depositional damage that has changed its profile. A cast lead artefact,probably a weight, of Medieval to Modern date, AD 1200 - 1900. It is in the form of a short squat bell, having a circular base and curved concave sides rising to a flat top. On the top is an integrally cast, rectangular suspension loop, pierced with a small, circular perforation. The weight has a patchy white patina. It is 19.1mm high, the diameter of the base is 28.1mm and it weighs 50.63g (1.78oz), so was probably intended as a two ounce weight. A complete copper alloy Terret Ring of Roman date (AD 43-200). The object is a strap-mounted terret, Lewis' type 19 'dropped-bar' form. At the top of the object is a bend circular integral hoop, which is sub-ovate in section. The hoop would have acted as a rein guide. Extending from the base of hoop is an integrally cast sub-rectangular loop that is oval in section. It is positioned on the same plane as the hoop. It has a short cylindrical pin which would have been held in a handle attachment lug, and then a wider swan-necked curved handle, broken at the base of the side of the handle.
