Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An almost complete, but damaged, medieval copper-alloy strap-end dating to c. 1275 to 1400. The strap-end consists of two pieces of copper-alloy sheet forming front and back plates. The sheets are long and trapezoidal; they end in a rounded lobe and then a trefoil- or cross-like shape. These last two terminal elements are separated from each other and from the main body of the strap end by a narrowed waist. The two sheets are fixed together with a copper-alloy rivet in situ, at the lobed terminal. There is another rivet hole through each plate at the opposite (attachment) end, but …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete late early-medieval (to medieval, possibly) copper-alloy mount probably dating from the 11th century. The mount is sub-oval with rounded ends, each with a hole for a rivet; the long edges are angled outwards at their centres. The object is decorated in an abstract Ringerike style with a centrally engraved lozenge outlined by a border which broadly echoes the angles of the lozenge and angled sides. Each terminal is rendered as a trefoil of fleur-de-lis, with small, outcurving side fleurs delineated by engraved lines an a double transverse fillet connecting the side fleurs ar…

An incmplete medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount (strap-fitting). It comprises a central elongated oval element terminating at one end in a small sub-rectangular, squared off expanded terminal; on the other side there is a worn break from where a similar terminal has been lost. The central element is domed with a concave reverse and convex front, while the surviving terminal is thinner and D-shaped in cross-section. There is an empty, circular rivet hole at the intersection of the surviving terminal and the central circular element. At the other side there is the edge of an incomple…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete copper-alloy medieval buckle plate probably dating from the late 12th to 13th century (c. 1150-1300). The frame is missing, being broken at the hinge loops, while two of the prong-like extensions at the attachment end of the plate are vestigial, and a third has broken through at its attachment hole. The front part of the plate, closest to the hinge end, is rectangular. As implied, the plate then divides into three bars extending towards the attachment end outlining two openwork shapes in the plate. As noted, two of these narrow bars are now broken close to the plate b…

A copper-alloy medieval single-looped oval frame dating to c. 1250-1400. On its outer edge there are two shallow, angled knops flanking three transverse grooves; the example can be classified as being of Meols type 8. The bar is narrowed, recessed and offset. The pin is missing; the central groove on the outer edge would have acted as a pin rest. The buckle measures 14.02 mm in length, 15.20 mm in width and weighs 0.87 g. A similar example can be found in Whitehead (2003, 22) no. 92.

A complete medieval cast copper-alloy strap-slide (strap-fitting). The frame is five sided with a wide flat base, sides that are almost parallel but in fact slope outwards very slightly, and an angled peak in the centre of the top bar. The base is rectangular in cross section and the sides and top bar are trapeziodal, the inner sides being wider than the outer. There is a hole through the base of the frame, halfway along and off centre, through which a circular-sectioned rivet projects internally. The frame is 22.9 mm long at the base, widening to 24.4 mm at the top bar. It is 18.7…

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval single-looped buckle of composite type with forked spacer dating to c. 1350 - 1450. The buckle is oval, lipped and notched and the pin is in place. One of the forked spacers has broken off close to the frame but the other is intact, albeit now bent outwards. A complete medieval cast copper-alloy strap-slide (strap-fitting). The frame is oval to D-shaped, with an integral circular sectioned rivet projecting outwards 2.2mm from the centre of the base, now bent slightly to one side. The sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section, becoming slightly D-shaped on the outer edge, probably due to wear. The frame is 14.6 mm wide, 12.2 mm long including the rivet and 2.4 mm thick, it weighs 0.87 g. There are extensive file marks on all faces. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 230; fig 145) illustrate a very similar example, no. 1232, and su…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy medieval single-looped trapezoidal buckle dating to the period c. 1350-1500. The bar is narrowed and the pin is complete. The front of the buckle appears to be folded back over on itself at the outer edge, double thickness, with incurved corners, which is an appearance intended when cast. The front part has a series of six diagonal grooves, between which sits the pin, and a wavy front edge. The sides and bar are thinned by comparison. The object has a green patina. It measures 33.04 mm in length, 28.50 mm in width at the front and 20.3 mm at the strap bar, 4.63 in …
