Bag 1 Photo a - Musket Ball One lead alloy musket shot / ball of post medieval 1600-1800 date. The shot is sub-spherical in shape with a relatively even surface. The shot has a casting seam and spurs from the mould removed. It is a light grey colour with a relatively thick surface patina. Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. A complete copper alloy Terret Ring of Roman date (AD 43-200). The object is a strap-mounted terret, Lewis' type 19 'dropped-bar' form. At the top of the object is a bend circular integral hoop, which is sub-ovate in section. The hoop would have acted as a rein guide. Extending from the base of hoop is an integrally cast sub-rectangular loop that is oval in section. It is positioned on the same plane as the hoop. The underside of the wings is recessed to accomodate a coiled spring which is secured by an axial pin the ends of the which are located in holes through circular plates at the ends of the wings. A copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped rectangular buckle frame dating to c. 1570-1700. The frame is plain with a notch for the pin at one end, though the pin itself is missing. It has slightly rounded corners. The object has a green patina. The buckle measures 28.50 mm in length, 24.26 mm in width and weighs 6.49 g. A similar example can be found illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 75) no. 459 and given the above date range, though without supporting evidence.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Colchester Derivative Double lug Type, dating to AD 43-100. It consists of the head and a short part of the upper bow of the brooch. The head has two semi-circular cross-sectioned wings which house the spring mechanism still in place; unfortunately, the pin is missing. It is covered with dark brown patina and is very smooth and shiny apart from several small areas of corrosion.
