An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of medieval date, c.AD 1350 -1450. The buckle is a single looped D-shape with a lipped frame and a narrowed and recessed strap bar. The lip is notched for the pin. The pin no longer remains. The metal has a dark brown/green patina and is worn. The buckle is 15.1mm long, 15.1mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 0.9g. Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead p.20 and are dated to circa AD 1350 - 1450. Ref: Whitehead, R. (1996). Buckles 1250-1800. Chelmsford: Greenlight Publishing.

An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of medieval date, c.AD 1450 -1550. The buckle is a single looped D-shape with a narrowed and recessed strap bar. Lobed knops are present to either end of the bar and the outer loop of the frame is decorated with a series of transverse grooves resulting in a rope-work appearance. The pin no longer remains. The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The buckle is 42.9mm long, 31.3mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 6.3g. An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1720 - 1790. Only a loop chape remains. The chape is trapezoidal with two tubular hinges for the spindle and two internal spikes to the longer end. The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The chape is 46.6mm long, 31.8mm wide, 2.2mm thick and weighs 7.5g. A similar chape is illustrated in Whitehead, p.103, no.VIII. According to Whitehead, shoe buckles were fastened "further down the instep as they increased in size after 1720" resulting in more stable means of attachment such as the loop chape with forked tongue…
