Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete pair of copper-alloy tweezers, probably from the Roman period (AD 43-410), but could date up until the Early Medieval period (c. AD 800). The tweezers are formed from a single rectangluar sectioned band of copper-alloy which has been bent in half, creating a sprung loop one end. It consists of two arms extending from the loop, both of which gradually become wider apart from each other as they curve out. At the terminals of the arms, one has the remains of an inward return of the metal (the pincers), while this is missing from the other arm. There is no visible deocration.

The axe head has a downeard-curving blade with square butt with indentation intended to represent a socket, and an integrally cast loop on the underside. The metal is smooth and quite shiny, especially the top side of the object. The patina of this object suggests Late Bronz…

The object consists of a long, curved piece of metal, folded in the centre, with a fan-like decorated element attached at one end. A copper-alloy clasp, consisting of a long and thin piece of metal folded over on itself, one end with an attached fan-like decorative section. This is similar to LVPL-F71167 but differs in the shallow-relief design on the fantail element; in this case the decoration appears to feature a seated figure, possibly female, in a domestic or cottage industry setting. The floor appears checquered and roughly in isometric perspective., with flanking scrolls.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The cross guard of a dagger, probably of sixteenth century date. A similar but not identical example can be found under GLO-5E1DA7. It is of a lozenge shape, with ends that flare out like trumpet. There is a thin projection that loops back towards the centre; a broken attachment point on the opposite side probably indicates a symmetrical feature was present on the opposite arm. The central hole through which the tang would have passed is of a rounded quadrilateral shape.

The other side retains its natural, smooth surface until it meets the covering, scaled retuching at the edges. A sub-circular central perforation is present. A cast copper alloy ring of probable Iron Age or Early Roman date, c. BC 800- AD 50. The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. Both sides of the ring is decorated with recessed dots, probably cast rather than punched; 26 on one side and c. 31 on the other.
