Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval (AD 1250-1350) pendant, possibly of horse furniture origin. It is possible to guess that it was crudely symmetrical in its original form, though it is now a vague teardrop shape and thin and brittle at the edges. Some of the former surface remains, featuring small amounts of blue-grey enamel. The design appears to have been a stylised avian or other bird like creature; heraldic animals are common on these kinds of pendants, as can be seen in Steven Ashley's EEA report (2002).

The reverse legend has the letters CENTES which may be part of the reverse legend FACIENTES IVVAT (Mitchiner, 1991, p.1064, no.1664a), but this is associated with a different obverse legend. The reverse follows the format with several lines in exergue like the jettons referred to below, but the legend does not match any of this type.
