A complete cast copper alloy miniature socketed axe head of Late Bronze Age to Roman date ( c. 1100 BC - AD 409). The axe head has a downeard-curving blade with square butt with indentation intended to represent a socket, and an integrally cast loop on the underside. The metal is smooth and quite shiny, especially the top side of the object. Such axe heads are considered to be miniature representations and possibly votive offerings of their full sized counterparts and have been associated with 'ritual' (cringe) activity or worn as amulets. A Roman copper alloy miniature socketed axehead, of Robinson's (1995) type III, probably dating to c. AD 44-410. The miniature axehead is sub-rectangular in cross section tapering to a point ath te cutting edge. In profile the upper edge of the blade is straight, whislt the lower edge expands outwards into the cutting edge following the neck, creating a 'drooping' appearance. An off centre sub-oval depression imitates the socket a the mouth of the axehead.
Dimensions: length 20.2mm; width 8.4mm; thickness 5.4mm; weight 3.18g.

A complete cast copper-alloy miniature or 'votive' axe dating to the Roman period, c. 43-400 AD. It consists a circular-sectioned haft and sub-rectangular tapering head cast as one piece, the head demonstrating a squared off butt while slightly drooping along its length. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 32.29mm in length, while the head itself measures 27.95mm long by 7.56mm wide and 3.78mm thick at its midpoint. The haft measures c. 3.23mm thick at its midpoint, and it weighs 6.54g.

A cast lead-alloy Roman miniature axe head, dating to AD 43-410. The axe head has a sub-rectangular butt, which is transversely pierced with a circular hole. The body flares and thins towards the blade, which has both tips broken. On one side of the body there are two longitudinal incised lines.
Axes, mainly from religious shrines and graves, form the largest group of miniature tools found from Roman Britain.
