Record ID: YORYM-F6CC6C
Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete stone spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is made of a flint. It has been shaped through covering, scaled retouching on one side and the edges. The other side retains its natural, smooth surface until it meets the covering, scaled retuching at the edges. A sub-circular central perforation is present. The end of the perforation on the worked side of the spindle whorl is wider than the end of the perforation on the unworked side, suggesting that the hole was drilled from the worked side. The spindle whorl is undecorated.
The spindle whorl is 30.2mm in diameter, 11.…

Object type: MIRROR CASE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy mirror case of Medieval date, c.AD 1150 - 1450. The case comprises one circular disc with a raised edge, the lid portion of the mirror case. The matching lower portion of the case is lost.
The disc has one pierced lug projecting from one edge with a fragmentary copper-alloy rivet still in situ. This is part of the hinge mechanism connecting the lid with the lost base. A slightly hooked lug projects from the opposite edge. This combined with a projection on the lost base, would have formed the catch to close the case.
The exterior surface of the lid is …

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete stone bead of uncertain date. The bead is oval with a very fine central circular perforation running through its length. The fineness of the perforation could suggest machine manufacture, meaning that the bead would have a Modern date of c.AD 1900-present, although the lack of contextual evidence means that this cannot be stated with any certainty. The stone is black in colour with white, mottled discolouration on its outer surface. Slight fragmentation at the narrow ends of the bead reveal the black core of the stone. Dr. Sarah King, Curator of Natural Science at York Muse…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A fragment of a copper-alloy Bronze Age socketed axehead (c. 1100 - 800 BC). Only the cutting edge remains. The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan, sub-rectangular in profile, and triangular in section. The fragment is hollow with an internal triangular recess tapering to a point towards the cutting edge. The edges and faces of the axehead fragment are smooth and precise. The break is uneven and runs diagonally down the body of the axehead. Unfortunately not enough remains of the axehead to be able to identify it more precisely or attribute a closer date.
The metal has a green patina…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1400-1700.
The strap or belt fitting is comprised of a band which is rectangular in plan and section with a decorative segment. The band is bent into a narrow U shape with breaks at either end, meaning that it is not clear whether the object would have originally been hook shaped or loop shaped. The front of the strap fitting widens into a decorative segment which bears three chevron-shaped grooves, giving the appearance of a feather or leaf. The decorative segment ends in a bifurcated br…
