Object type: JETTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy regal stock jetton of Louis XIV of France (1643-1715) with French inscriptions, so not a Nuremberg copy. The obverse reads [LOVIS.XIV.RO]Y.DE.FR.ET.DE.NAV, dating from 1679-1680. The reverse legend has the letters CENTES which may be part of the reverse legend FACIENTES IVVAT (Mitchiner, 1991, p.1064, no.1664a), but this is associated with a different obverse legend. The reverse follows the format with several lines in exergue like the jettons referred to below, but the legend does not match any of this type. A third of the jetton is missing, and there is an incomplete ci…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Circular tin alloy (pewter) mount or ferrule consisting of a rectangular strip soldered into a ring, decorated on the outer face with a line of lozenges or diamond shapes forming a band between parallel raised borders around the circumference of the ring. The decoration has been formed by pressing the strip against a pattern while rolling it through a mill. The ring is flat in section and is likely a mount from a utensil of some kind, for example, covering the junction between a handle and a knife blade. The style and manufacture suggests a Post-medieval date. A similar mount can b…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of the stem from a pewter or lead alloy spoon, rectangular in plan with one pointed and one flat end, both sheared off leaving raised edges. The upper face of the stem is decorated with a rouletted design of a circle with a dot in the centre above further rouletted curved lines and circles, which are incomplete because of the broken the edges. So this may have been towards the trefid terminal of the spoon stem where it expanded into a trefoil so that the leaves and other flowers would have been complete. There are similar rosettes rouletted onto 'dog-nose' (similar terminals) …

Cast copper alloy scabbard hook decorated with a groove in the shape of an S at the widest section of the body. The lower terminal of the hook has been bent over at right angles to the main body but would have originally been straight. The top of the hook is broken where it attached to the scabbard. Object type: INGOT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy ingot which would have originally been circular in plan and plano-convex in profile. This fragment is square in plan, triangular in profile, and rectangular in section, as it comes from one edge of the original ingot. Plano-convex ingots like this one were used during the Late Bronze Age, c.1150-700 BC. The surface of the ingot is pitted where air bubbles formed during the casting process. There are dark green and coppery brown areas and light green patches of bronze disease. Similar ingot fragments have been found in metalworkers' hoards in Cornwall da…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper-alloy strap end dating from the Medieval period. Sub-triangular in plan, 30 mm in length, 11.2 mm in width, tapering towards the broken edge, 1.5 mm in thickness and 3.6 g in weight. The surface of both faces has a smooth brownish-green patina but in areas is striated with shallow scratch marks, at an angle of about 45 degrees to the axis, probably due to movement in the soil. The narrower, pointed end is damaged as it curves to follow the strap or fabric that it was attached to, but there are no further rivet holes and it is impossible to decide how much longer…

A cast gilt copper-alloy horse harness pendant, dating from the Medieval period (c.1200-1400). The pendant is circular in plan, 20 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness, with the 5 mm long remnant of a suspension loop at the apex; total weight 4.2 g. The face of the pendant depicts in relief a 'pelican in her piety' which is a relatively common depiction in the later Medieval church. A pelican in relief stands on the edge of a bowl-shaped nest sitting it the top branches of an ornate tree which looks more like an elaborate stand, the branches formed by elongated curlicues. Three mouldi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch with blue enamelled inlay. The trumpet-shaped head triangulates slightly to an apex beyond a recessed squared-off edge. There is no evidence of a headplate, but a vertical wire head-loop projects from the back across a hollow circular section to the other edge of the head which would have held the spring mechanism and pin, both now missing. The head of the brooch where the patina survives is plain. The decoration below the head on the bow comprises lozenge-shaped recessed cells, with some fragments of blue enamel still within them. Bes…

Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy horse harness heraldic stud mount of quatrefoil design with angular projections. On the face of the mount is a design of a bleu enamelled lion passant in the centre, of a blue enamelled square frame, surrounded on each side by a red enamel panel, each holding a blue enamelled fleur-de-lys extending to the edge of the mount. The design combines the lion passant from the English Royal Arms and the fleur de lys from the French Royal Arms, so the mount is dated from after 1340 when Edward III incorporated the fleur de lys into the English Royal Arms (Clark, 2004, 71)…

Cast copper alloy stud or tack, sexfoil in plan with moulded decoration in the form of a three-layered fleuret with six small petals around a central circle and then six larger petals emanating from these and alternating with six lobed leaves within six arches that are meant to represent more petals underneath, alternating with six knops which form the border at the edge of the stud. The corroded base of shank on the back of the stud may be the remains of a separate iron rivet as it is covered in iron corrosion product so it is hard to see if this is another piece of metal as most of …
