Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap end fragment. Cast composite strap end, resembling a 'King's Head' type. A cast trapezoid plate with integral sides tapers towards a collared terminal with a two-stage knop whose rounded end is lightly nicked, to resemble a perfunctorily modelled cushion-crowned head. The other side of the terminal has features added to the lower part of the terminal to make a face of it: crudely incised triangular eyes with drilled dot pupils, and lines descending from the sides of the nose to flank a curved slit mouth. Another plate has been lost, though two rivets of diameter 2m…

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible stone cannon ball of medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1450- 1700. It is sub-spherical and made from what appears to be igneous rock, perhaps granite with possible feldspar inclusions. At 2.6 inches diameter, this ball is just too big for a Falcon cannon. It could be made for a non-standard firearm if it is a cannon ball. Other uses in industry cannot be ruled out. It is 65.6mm in diameter and weighs 380g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.5mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. One side has a series of eight wedge-shaped cut-outs removed from one face - whether on the master from which it was cast or as a modification of a plain whorl is uncertain, though the former would obviously be easier. This has produced the appearance of a gear wheel or cog, functions to which a soft metal like lead are unsuited. A cruciform or castellated appearance might have been intended, and the form might have been decorative, especially when the whorl was fres…

Silver finger ring.
