Copper alloy badge. Concavo-convex die-stamped badge in the form of a bird with forked tail in flight. The finder kindly suggests the species represented to be a swallow. This reporter considers it might rather be a bluebird; probably made as a trinket to promote Bluebird Toffee, made in the West Midlands 1898-1998, and now part of the Hull-based Needlers group. Now bent into a curl with only scars in the hollow back to indicate the former presence of pin gear, though a thin [diameter 0.7mm] drawn wire pin was loose in the bag. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1960. Length (as found): …

Lead offcuts. Two tiny fragments of lead: one is a rectangular billet of cast sheet, of length 17.2mm and thickness 2.6mm, folded and patinated. Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast blade of elongated sub-triangular form, resembling one side of a pair of tweezers, thinned at its broader end and thickened as it narrows, terminating at a small sharp curved rhomboid point. The pointed end might have served as a scoop or pick, though it is now dangerously sharp for this to be attempted. The broader 'tweezer' blade may have had a counterpart, though again, how attached is now unclear. Traces of white metal plating appear on one side of the object. Copper alloy possible mount. A flat plate of fungiform or mushroom shape with a slightly engrailed base and a central fixing hole of diameter 2.4mm. The crisp edges may suggest the object was die-stamped, which would imply a relatively recent date. Staining around the hole may be from an iron fixing pin [otherwise lost]. The object may have had a mechanical rather than a decorative function, perhaps as a spacer plate. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850. Iron wedge. A wrought iron blade approaching hourglass form, with a broad curved cutting edge, a constriction a little above its midpoint where the profile is slightly thickened, and a flat narrower butt. One side of the blade is thicker towards the cutting edge, with a sharp stepped edge to the thickened part. The straight edge opposite the cutting edge is burred by recurrent impact from the use of the object. This appears to be a tool for cutting wood, possibly in thin slices as with the manufacture of roof shingles, whose manufacture would involve a blade and mallet. The finder kin…
